Estimates vary on number of iPads sold
In the professional guesswork that is estimating Apple's sales numbers, numbers are varying wildly about just how many iPads Apple has sold.According to Philip Elmer-DeWitt, the general consensus is that Apple has sold about 8.25 million iPads. He's gathered quarterly estimates from many sources and compiled a list. They range from 3.80 million iPads sold (issued on September 28th by Brian Marshall of Gleacher & Co.) to 6.0 million (issued on October 1st by Robert Paul Leitao of Apple Finance Board).
As Philip points out, Apple sold 3.27 million iPads in the third quarter. Apple will hold its 4th quarter financial earnings conference call on October 18th, and TUAW will be live-blogging the event. Check back then to get the real numbers.

October 08 2010 at 2:06 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI could see as many as 9 million sold this quarter. The only limit of late has been production capacity. So it comes down to the question did they more than double production? A simple doubling would give them 6 million sold for the quarter. So if you want a range it would be between 6 & 9 mil for the quarter.
Shocking yes! At least to me, as that is an incredible launch of brand new technology. Frankly one for the record books.
That's a LOT!
There were "only" 8-10 Million Blu-ray players estimated in all of 2009

And "only" 24 Million predicted in 2010 (minus PS3).

At this rate, Apple in 12 months will have produced as many iPads as ALL blu-ray players up to 2009 (minus PS3). That doesn't count all their other video playing devices... Nanos, Classics, Touch, and iPhone. iTunes represents more video devices than ALL of blu-ray several times over.... they don't "need" to support the format. They really are a media monster... they've even overtaken the top "retail" music spot from Target and Walmart as well.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't estimates "rough calculations" anyway? Who is surprised that estimates would vary, especially those done by analysts with poor information?
