Rumor: Apple talking with CDMA carriers in India

Adding to the already bloated CDMA iPhone rumor mill, The Wall Street Journal is now reporting that Apple is in talks with Reliance Communications Ltd and Tata Teliservices Ltd to bring the much-talked-about CDMA equipped iPhone to India. Apparently, talks with Tata Teleservices Ltd have been going on for some 4 to 5 months now.

Similarly, this same CDMA iPhone is the one that has been repeatedly rumored to appear on - surprise, surprise - Verizon's network early next year, also according to the Journal. So, Verizon folks, things are looking more and more in your favor, once again -- at least until they don't, once again.

If Apple were to introduce a code division multiple access (CDMA) iPhone, it would open Apple's iPhone up to roughly 550 million new customers worldwide, according the latest official figures from the CDMA Development Group. This certainly would expand Apple's iPhone market!

In India, one of the world's fastest growing wireless markets, Apple has the potential to get its iPhone into 134 million current CDMA handset users' hands, though Apple Insider suggests that nearly half the country may struggle to afford the phone, with individuals earning an estimated US$1.25 or less a day.

If the rumors are to be believed, a CDMA iPhone release early next year is looking more and more likely. As always, nothing is certain until we see it in the cold, hard, light of day.

Given ther iPhone has been available on all networks in the UK for nearly a year now I'd be interested to see what Apple's share of the mobile phone market is over here.

@ Aakaash - you hit the nail on its head.

Ist Apple Insider is no authority on Economic situation in India. You quoting them is a proof of Americans being Stupid ( Come on half you population still feels that the sun goes around the Earth). What took USA 70 years to Achieve ; India is doing it in 10 years.

Dont be surprised if you see Dumb Americans dancing to tunes of Indian Snake Charmers in 10 years.

Wow TUAW another hit at India. okay let me try to put it in figures for you (source: Wikipedia)With a population of 1,187,255,000. if we just take into consideration 1% of the population purchasing the iPhone. We are looking at a sale of 11.8 Million phones for just 1% of the population. Compared to Verizon's entire user base of 86.6 million users. Now lets put things further in picture iPhone are already sold here unofficially. I am currently using an iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, Blackberry (For work), HTC Desire (dev purposes). Th iPhone 4 here costed at the time Rs 70,000 which is $1578.71 (based on current exchange rate). My 3Gs at the time costed me Rs 50000 which is $1127.65 My Blackberry costed me Rs 29,990 which is $676.36. My HTC Desire costed Rs 27,000 which is $608.93. Now lets add it all up the figure is a cool $3,991.65. And I am still just talking about my personal phones. If i get into figures of family, friends and relatives to even try to give you a broader perspective as to the kind of buying power here am sure you will shut your nonsense about India. Also, If you actually researched 4 out the the top 8 of the worlds richest business men are Indians. Yet, because of the psyche of all Americans we are never considered a viable market. Nokia, considered as as a Huge market and 15 years down the line we are one of its biggest markets.
Take a second, Think, Research before writing crap. Even your racist comments on our game Teen Patti, If you would've actually put in some effort. And i mean literally 2 mins of effort you would've realized its one of India's most popular card games. And if you really cant report anything good about India then why do it at all ?

Just to throw some light, almost every iphone user i know in india, buys it from the grey market and end up paying almost double the price. So obviously, the sales figures don't have a good story to tell.

Regardless of whether it comes as CDMA or GSM, we just hope Apple provides its own after-sale service here. Right now it's a struggle if you need your existing iphone repaired for the phone, Apple totally disowns the phone.

And even if half the country can't afford it, there's another half longing to get their hands on the iphone, some even ready to pay an exorbitant price.
But we don't see the point, when others such as Blackberry, Samsung or Nokia provide such excellent service. And now we have android phones which will inevitably rule the roost here.

Apple sales will continue to suffer here if they keep turning a blind eye to this market like they've done in the past. And the reason they shouldn't ignore India is that even if they manage to bite into a small share of this huge market, it would mean selling more than half the number of iphones sold in the US.

Buyers in India (me included) get it from the grey market primarily because Airtel and Vodaphone - the "official" carriers - sell locked iPhones at full price. Why should I pay full price for a locked iPhone? Full price is approximately equal to $730!!

I got mine from the US and jailbroke the phone. I was lucky, the seller bought the original iPhone and was eligible for the 3G when AT&T introduced it. So I got it his old phone for about $150.

This is a very cool device but not worth paying $700. Once my current iPhone dies I don't intend to get another if it is still full price.

Furthermore, Apple support in India just plain sucks. This includes support for MacBook Pros, Mac Pros etc. But then computers are less portable and so less prone to accidental drops etc.

A friend paid full price to buy the phone in India. He accidentally dropped it and as luck would have it the phone stopped working. The local Apple retailer is unable to repair the phone so he had to wait 1 month for the phone to be shipped to Singapore/HongKong. This is repair that he is actually paying for!!

Unless carrier subsidized and Apple gets better local servicing and support I am not buying one.

BTW at $200 this will sell like hot cakes in India. People in India are used to paying full price for phones but the sweet spot is $250-$300. So if carriers can manage to subsidize the phone to around this price and charge customers on the plan this will work very well here.

Note - There are rumors that Airtel will officially unlock your iPhone after 1 year. This used to be their earlier contract and is no longer true. I checked with Airtel.
