SwirlySMS brings free SMS app to iPad 3G

Released today, "SwirlySMS free for iPad 3G" offers a free SMS solution that allows you to send and receive messages from your iPad 3G. This is a jailbreak-only solution. Available from the Cydia store, the new app uses your iPad's SIM to introduce native texting without having to hack your way into command-line solutions.

The application should work with any supported SIM that offers SMS features. You will be charged for SMS text messages according to the plan associated with your SIM card. I do not believe it's possible to add SMS packages to the native plan, so if the app works at all, you'll likely be charged $0.25/text at the standard US AT&T a la carte rate.

The app has been tested primarily in Sweden on the Telia network, but its developers have been doing SMS apps for three years now -- so it's a good bet that things should work out of the box with standard AT&T SIMs for United States users. Given that the app is free, if you have any problems, I'm sure the devs will offer a full money-back guarantee.

After thoroughly testing the software with your equipment, you can upgrade to a no-ad version for five bucks, or a full-featured MMS/SMS app (SwirlyMMS) for twelve.

Works fine here in the Netherlands too. Don't know yet what the costs are going to be. Who knows, maybe I won't need a new iPhone4 anymore? ;-)

If SwirlySMS works for the iPad the way it initially did for the original iPhone (EDGE), I'll definitely hold off from that purchase. Still a bit skeptical from my first attempt with this app. Anyone else, thoughts?

Jason, even data plan SIM cards (on American carriers, i have no experience in the rest of the world) have phone numbers assigned to them. All CDMA data cards (such as Verizon) have phone numbers too and support SMS as well.

This app seems pretty pointless for us in the US since you could just get Textfree and have the same features without costing yourself a quarter per message. Since you probably haven't given out your iPad SIM card's phone number anyway, the free number Textfree will give you would be just fine.

no, i don't work for TF but i do use it.

So do you get a phone number associated with your SIM card? How does another person send a SMS to this app?

If you go into Settings, it's listed under General > About > Cellular Data Number

I'm confused, why not just use apps like textplus or textnow with your 3G connection--no sms charges and no hassle of adding a txt plan to your iPad.

Adrian, can textplus and textnow for example receive an SMS sent from an regular cell phone?

yes both can receive txts from other regular cell phones, which is why im confused why you would jump through hoops to get swirly working and be charged per msg for it when there are several good apps that do it for free.

Is this in some way better than using Google Voice? Because it seems like it does the same thing except I would get charged for the SMS messages when using SwirlySMS.

Jason, it is on the Cydia store not Apple's App Store.

I suspect the next post TUAW will make will be "SwirlySMS removed from the App Store".
