Hollywood's love affair with the iPad

The New York Times reports that the iPad is catching on in Hollywood, attracting actors, writers, producers and other personalities looking to alter their workflow or even get in a few rounds of Angry Birds between takes.

The Times begins by describing a meeting between director JJ Abrams, Damon Lindelof and producer Bob Orci (among others) about the upcoming Star Trek movie. As the group talked, Orci used is his iPad to flip through potential location photos, stills from the first movie and a picture of an actress under consideration. He told the Times, "When you're carrying a little TV around, you bring the power of imagery to places that you don't normally have it."

Scenes like this are becoming increasingly common. The Times notes that former American Idol judge Paula Abdul has used an iPad to show off her new music video, while actress Julie Benz enjoys Angry Birds during downtime. "It's perfect for the long hours here," she said.

Apple is also enjoying a good amount of product placement lately, which the company claims it doesn't pay for. A recent episode of NBC's The Office had a character use his iPad to find the time, and ABC's Modern Family devoted an entire episode around the tablet in March.. In fact, the Nielsen Company reports that Apple products have appeared about 2,438 times on television programs through September of this year. All of that adds up to buzz and free advertisement for Apple.

to their credit I haven't seen any 'zoom and enhance' moments with shows using ipads. Everyone is doing very plausible things. Like just the other night I was watching one of those CSI type cop shows and the detectives were using an ipad to watch a copy of security tape footage. No zooms, no 'lets see the other side even though the room only has the one camera and it doesn't move or pan'. just a straight video playback.

It was so real I was actually shocked.

ipad not only hit the headline, but also hit the screen of TV. So it comes out a conclusion: ipad is The Attractive One.
I would like to use movie to ipad converter to convert some hollywoods' movie to my ipad to watch.

I have a hard time believing that the kind of crass iPad episode of Modern Family (a show I generally love) just came about due to a love of Apple products when you consider that Steve Jobs is on Disney's board of directors.

The writer's for Modern Family explicitly said they already had an episode outlined and being written centered on Phil wanting a hard to get item for his birthday. After the iPad was announced and buzz started to grow it was a no-brainer and Apple provided them with 2 iPads to use.

Not everything is a conspiracy.

The lawyers in the CBS show The Good Wife this season all are now using ipads, as they mentioned a way to go paperless if I remember right.

Awsome kind of free PR for Apple... But the design of the products really help this along very nicely...

Must say once again... Doesn't get why there is so little competition for Apple in the Designer-Laptop-Desktop-market... When i'm in the local mall - all of the HP/Lenovo/Compaq/ACER/ASUS really do look a lot like each other... And it's not a nice looking bunch....

Sony is the PC competitor to Macs. They make very high quality laptop/desktops, but they don't sell as well as the toss-away ones because they cost more. The prices are nearer to Apple's prices than other PC brands too.

Though on the article, I've heard people complain about Macs in TV. Studios response being to just covering up the Apple-logo, even though everyone knows what they are. But think about it, if you are going to put a prop in a movie/show, are you going to put something ugly or something that looks nice?

It'll be interesting to see if we see iPads more in TV like we did with iPhones, since the usage is completely new. Only the next few years will tell.
