Nintendo sees Apple as bigger threat than Microsoft and Sony
Apple CEO Steve Jobs has made a point in recent keynotes to mention the fact that the iPhone and iPod touch are the world's best selling portable gaming devices, well ahead of longtime champion Nintendo. Nintendo America president Reggie Fils-Aime has acknowledged the threat and sees Apple as a bigger problem for his company than either Microsoft or Sony. While hardcore gamers generally prefer the higher-powered Xbox and PlayStation platforms, far more consumers have bought into the casual gaming approach enabled by Nintendo's Wii and DS. The high quality and easy-to-play-in-short-burst games available on Apple's handheld devices combined with their wireless capabilities have made them even more compelling than Nintendo's offerings.
At first unconcerned, Nintendo's anxiety gradually grew into Reggie Fils-Aime's admission.
So far, the Apple incursion into the gaming space has mostly hurt the DS, but that could soon change. The surge in popularity of the new generation Apple TV could end up taking a big bite out of the Wii. Since the Apple TV runs on iOS and has already been jailbroken, the expectation is that, before long, Apple will make an app market available for the set top device. When that happens, we are likely to see games running on it that could possibly feature Wii-style motion controls for use with the iPhone or iPod.

As a grown man on the subway in NYC...I wouldn't be caught dead playing video games on a Nintendo device...an iPhone, on the other hand...sure.
I may be missing something here, but there is a threshold that one must cross as an adult that makes it difficult to purchase a portable gaming only device...it is easier to maintain some level or respectability when playing solitaire on the iPhone...because it can be used to make "adult'" phone calls
I'm not sure why, but that is just the way I feel and it may be completely irrational.
Basically, IMHO, It would just seem harder to get laid.... ;)
Totally agree.
Except... you suggesting that you can make actual phone calls with your iPhone :-)
And your phone would be out of battery after playing games.

The iPhone and iPod touch are time killers while you are waiting to see the dentist, are
on public transportation or need something to distract a bratty kid.
I had a Nintendo DS first, and then an iPod touch.
After a few months I gave the iPod touch to my Mom who loves it (she has no games
on it).
I then gave my Nintendo DS to a friend and got myself a DSi XL.
I love video games, and that's why when I reach into my backpack I pull out a
Nintendo gaming system and not an Apple product that just happens to play games.
Granted, the price is quite expensive, but give it some time and the cost will come down.
Its not just 3D games that are new to the table, there will be 3D photos on the 3DS, it will also feature a motion sensor and gyro sensor - I personally can't wait to spend my hard earned pounds on these features on a dedicated games console.
I also love the sound of being able to download 3D films to the 3DS, this will be HUGE in the coming months and years!
And I think you underestimate the quality of the games from Nintendo, these are epic games that ooze quality and atmosphere.
I also prefer the cartridge games. Have spent a fair bit of money on both downloadable games from Nintendo and from the App store for my iPhone. Once you buy a game on the DS (cartridge) and clock it, you can trade it in for a new game. You cant do this with virtual purchases.
I suppose it comes down to how much you like games.
Have to agree on one thing though, that photo is awful!
It's the lost Miliband brother!

When anyone can buy and iPod Touch 8gb with a camera and music capability for $229. So it doesn't have 3D yet. So what? It's not like 3D games are picking up yet.
I think Nintendo's pricing the Nintendo 3DS at $300 bucks is going to be their downfall. It's still using cartridges, it doesnt have onboard storage etc.
And before you start bitching and wailing, the announcement for the price for the 3DS was made in Japan at 25,000 yen which translates loosely for $300 USD. If Nintendo prices its handheld around the $200 - $250 price point I can see it then being competitive to the iPod Touch/iPhone market.
I just know im not going to spend that amount of money on a handheld, just because it has 3D...
PS. That mugshot of Reggie, reminds me of the haircuts in the 70's.
The Nintendo 3DS won't cost $300 in the US and Europe. It'll most likely cost $250. And plus, it doesn't JUST have 3D. People often think that all Ninty added was 3D...WRONG. You'll be surprised at what it can do. (look it up, I can't list all that stuff in this comment...lol)

#2: that is one ugly mug.
That photo is an even larger threat to Nintendo.....

The iPod Touch / iPhone has some great titles, but none compete with the likes of Zelda, Mario, Metroid and the many other franchises they have under their belt.
Especially when they all go 3D in early 2011.
Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, Space miner, Warpgate, Diner Dash, Pocket Frogs, Inotia 2, Zenonia 2, Rimlands, Pocket Legends, Yslandia, Field Runners, Trenches, Plants vs Zombies and Zombie Smash and the list goes on... Nintendo has classics, and some have gotten better all together, but its the same over and over and over again. So if you want to play classics, get a Gameboy advanced... or a Wii.

Quality please, not quantity.
