Rumor: Camera woes holding up white iPhone, may be perma-postponed

The mysterious and semi-mythical white iPhone 4 just can't catch a break. First Apple acknowledges the phone won't see stores before this Spring; now Cult of Mac is reporting that the reason may not be a manufacturing issue at all. Instead, the phone's white case and the rear-facing camera may be interacting in a downright uncooperative way.

The CoM source suggests that the white iPhone case leaks light into the camera sensor, resulting in washed-out photos regardless of the subject lighting. The problem was supposedly identified very late in the game at Apple's testing center that qualifies cases for use with the phone.

Considering that the tick-tock of phone releases means we'll likely see another iPhone model over the summer anyway, it doesn't seem too far-fetched to stand with Boy Genius Report and their source that says the iPhone 4 will never ship in white. The hypothesis/inside info is that another delay would be announced in March, leading to the white 4 being superceded by the white 5.

If you're waiting for a white iPhone 4 -- really now -- please stop holding your breath.

I have the White iPhone (Purchased the parts off WhiteiPhone4Now.com)

I've noticed when taking photos with the flash on the back of the phone it does indeed wash the photo out. You can't see jack. Very frustrating. :(

Here's my problem... okay let's just say that it's inevitably delayed and never coming out.

Then why does Apple continue to keep it listed on their iPhone section of their website? Just remove it and call it a day already. Just seems odd we're hearing all these things and no official press released from Apple.

I've noticed a similar issue with my iPhone4 and a Orange case I got a mall kiosk. With the case on all of my photos have an orange hue to them.

I even used a dremmel to make the opening around the flash bigger... and it didn't make a difference.

There are a few of us, like myself who were actually waiting and anticipating the release of the White iPhone 4. My question is why doesn' Apple just come out with a press release and flat out say, "Look we're not making the White iPhone 4."

What's with all the tightly closed mouths?

Agreed.
Something is missing with all the stories/rumors that have been released since June.
The only official thing we've heard is (1) delay until July, then (2) delay until the end of the year.
Everything else is rumors.
So Apple send out a press release to end it or for those of us waiting... Christmas present to ourselves.

"The hypothesis/inside info is that another delay would be announced in March"

Yes, that's makes perfect sense. Apple learned nothing from the antenna fiasco so they will now proceed to deliberately mislead the trade and the public so they can be ridiculed by the press and consumers yet again. I wouldn't bet your house on that theory.

Inside info? The only thing this info is inside is someone's empty head.

I haven't noticed this issue with my white iPhone 4 with the OEM backplate. I had my black iPhone converted to white about 2 weeks ago and since then have taken multiple photos in both dark (bar) and bright (outside daylight) conditions. The photos appear to be the same quality as they were when the back plate was black.

Thanks for taking the time to dispute this. I've been waiting fr the white iPhone and wanted to take advantage of my AT&T upgrade since July. It would be nice to just get a black phone and swap parts.
If you wouldn't mind telling me, where did you get the parts from specifically and for how much?
Just want to see if it is worth the trouble.
Writing on my lovely white iPhone 3G. ;-)

@ep2002

I sent in my black iPhone 4 to iResQ.com to have the parts swapped out. It's a rather steep initial cost of $250 (plus shipping), but since my black parts were in perfect condition, they gave me back $180 and kept the parts. You have the option to sell them you black parts or not, so it's up to you, but I couldn't justify an additional $250. In total, it came to right around $100 after shipping. They're fast too, the phone was waiting on my doorstep 2 days after I sent it in.

If you have the money and want a unique phone, I'd highly recommend them. Good luck in your search!
