Microsoft also declares record revenue, but Apple still on top

Apple announced revenue of $20 billion last quarter, which puts the Cupertino company on top by $4 billion in terms of incoming money. But Microsoft still rules net income, with Apple pulling in $4.31 billion for the same quarter. That may change next reporting period, given Apple's steam in the industry so far, but no matter which way you slice it, both of these companies are rolling in the dough.

At best, they can be referred to as orthogonal rivals, at least in the products that rake in such humongous profits for their respective balance sheets..
And no, I don't count the loss-leading Zune and X-box (or IntelliMouse for that matter) as serious hardware offerings from Microsoft, which by its earnings show it is a primarily software company.

In a free market, in the tech sector, they are absolutely, 100% competitors. How you arrive at any other conclusion is beyond any human logic I can divine.

I guess that's one way to look at it. But isn't it better to win in the profit category? In most cases I think I'd take MSFT's numbers over Apple's.
