iOS 4.2 Gold Master release seeded to developers

The day all iPad users have been waiting for is just about upon us; iOS 4.2 has finally gone Gold Master. Apple is giving developers the go-ahead to download what will likely be the final release version of its latest mobile operating system and SDK. While all but the first generation iPhones and iPod touches will be eligible for the update, the big news is that the iPad will finally move up to the fourth generation of iOS, gaining multitasking and app folders.

All the iOS 4.2 devices will be adding two marquee features: Air Print for remote printing via a networked Mac or compatible HP hardware, and Air Play to hand off video playback to the iOS-based Apple TV.

The new OS should be available for general download sometime in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

I reckon that Nov 24 is a fair bet. Apple will want to give developers enough time to compile and test any required updates to their apps. They (Apple) will also need a bit of time to get through the torrent of approvals that will no doubt be submitted by developers.

Looking forward to the iOS 4 goodness on the iPad though!

Airplay via Youtube and iPod app works perfectly - both sound and video, on iPhone/iPad streamed to my AppleTV. Photos: no dice... Kinda strange. You would think that photos was the easy part?

I'm sorry but I was too fast - only audio works for me as well. I'm pretty sure we need to get an update for our Apple TVs before video will stream. Sorry for the mixup.

Same here! I've read where others have been able to do this. Odd!

Same here... no streaming of photos over Airplay either.

Not what Steve promised in the keynote!

Double click home screen, then select orientation lock from the task bar. It's not a huge imposition for me.

Not ALL iPad owners will be happy. I, for one, will mourn the loss of the (hardware) orientation lock I feel as though it is a MAJOR take-away by Apple. As one who bought a device with such a feature, I should have, at least, the opyion to retsin it

The folks that have the betas claim it's absolutely smooth and the limited RAM isn't noticeable at all. So I think Apple's doing alright.

And also, the slowed to a crawl thing with the iPhone 3G was fixed a while ago. I know, I have one. And also, 4.x on my iPod touch 3rd gen hasn't slowed it down one bit.
