Report: OmniVision to supply iPad image sensors

Barron's reports today that manufacturer OmniVision has been tapped to supply image sensors for the next-generation iPad. Citing a note from investment firm Detweiler Fenton & Co., Barron's suggests that the new iPad, due in the first quarter of 2011, will feature two cameras: one 5 MP model and one a VGA. It's also expected that FaceTime will be supported.

It seems quite likely that a future iPad will support FaceTime. Shortly after the current iteration was released, the folks at Mission:Repair confirmed that a slot in the iPad's frame perfectly accommodated an iSight camera pulled from a MacBook Pro. It's only a matter of times, folks. And once this thing hits...bam. Jetsons phone.

Is there actually any doubt that the next iPad will have facetime? No!

Any one who would buy an iPad at this point and does not expect a new one early next year is an idiot. Actually I'm still holding out for a refresh before the Christmas shopping season.

Either way though it is a given that a new iPad is coming soon. Anybody that doesn't understand that and post negative comments to the forum ought to be immediately banned from the forum. Seriously we have to consider is this a rational place for discussion or a forum for emotional venting.

Notice I'm being very specific here about complaints of a new device due to some idiot purchaseing the previous model a few weeks before. I'm not talking about discussions of the configuration of that device or the options. Everyone has slightly different needs, which need to be expressed. What we don't need is the expression of self importance and anger at Apple for delivering new hardware. Thus I urge TUAW to take agressive action against such posts in the future.

I'd agree with your assessment of gadget freaks who should know better, but there's also a large segment of the population who just don't care about having the latest and greatest. For them, iPad 1 will be a perfect gift for the holidays, they'll barely notice the release of iPad 2.

Waited for these features since the introduction of the Ipad. Now I (might) justify the purchase. No #1 you are right .... So a Apple gift card during Xmas is the answer.

it's unfortunate. that image on this story is not a frame/mid frame for the ipad. the mid frame for the ipad is plastic and black.

Everyone that buys an iPad during the holidays will be pissed if a new one comes out in the first quarter of 2011.

Given Apple's recent history of very regular annual releases, iPad2 is likely to be announced in the first quarter of 2011 and ship in the second quarter of 2011.

The original iPad was announced on January 27 and shipped at the beginning of April for the WiFi version, the end of April for 3G version, and starting in May internationally.

But if you get one these holidays then it should be easy enough to wait until early 2012 for the iPad3. Like the iPhone - just because it comes out every year doesn't mean you have to upgrade every year.
