Redsn0w Jailbreak for iOS 4.1 now available
If you're a fan of jailbreaking your iOS device, here's some good news for you. The iphone Dev-Team has released the latest version of redsn0w (0.9.6b2), allowing you to jailbreak your iOS 4.1 device (iPhone 4 / 3GS, iPad, 3rd and 4th generation iPod touch and 2nd generation Apple TV) into the land of the free. For either Mac OS X or Windows, this build takes advantage of geohot's recent limera1n exploit (the same used by greenpois0n and PwnageTool), leaving the SHAtter exploit to (hopefully) be saved for another day, according to the Dev-Team Blog.
The Dev-Team has also incorporated two additional extras to this build. Firstly, "...custom bootlogos for iPhone3G/iPhone3GS/iPod2G users (with qualifying bootroms)." And secondly, "an option that implements the 'DFU' button in PwnageTool. This button (which you can use from Windows) lets you prepare your device for a custom DFU. Even if you're purely a Windows user, you can get a trusted friend to run PwnageTool over your IPSW to create a custom IPSW. You can now install that custom IPSW on your own Windows box, after you run this redsn0w version."
For the download and further details, check out the Dev-Team's announcement post.
If you've gone and done the deed, let us know how it's working out for you in the comments below.

@bluehz_tuaw - if you get an answer let me know jonathan.ober@gmail.com. I have a jailbreak on two ipads, iphone 2g and iphone 4 and I was wondering that if I upgrade (not the iphone 2g - too old) to 4.2 and jailbreak that will I have to reinstall all the apps I have from the jailbreak cydia and installous apps? It's the only thing keeping me from having 4.2 on any device at the moment.
November 04 2010 at 10:07 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI am so confused with all the various 4.1+ jbs. I am happily running iOS4.0.1 jb iPhone 4 and I have it LOADED with all the stuff I use. Am I correct in my understanding of all these current 4.1+ jb methods - I will lose all my installed apps and setting and basically end up with a fresh install system?
I have been holding off on this because I really don't want to have to reinstall all my goodies again.
I used it two days ago to take a custom IPSW, created with the latest Pwnagetool on my VMWare Hackintosh, and transfer it onto my wife's phone (which is a 3GS and thus couldn't be updated to 4.1 any other way and still preserve the older, unlockable baseband). Redsn0w's new DFU mode worked and the firmware installed just fine. I haven't tested it for performing the jailbreak itself.
For my iPhone 4, the tool wasn't necessary. You can use TinyUmbrella to update the firmware to 4.1 without touching the baseband and then just use limera1n or greenpois0n to do the jailbreak from there.
Is there any way to unlock the iPhone 4 if you accidentally upgraded to 4.1 without TinyUmbrella?

November 03 2010 at 2:06 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI think you must own a time machine. 4.2 isn't available to the public.
Relax.
4.2's gone gold. It'll be available in less than two weeks. This is massively late to the game.
