Verizon iPhone announcement rumored to hit on November 9 [nope, it's the Droid Pro]

Update: Yes, well, so much for that theory. The Iconic Device is revealed as the Droid Pro, complete with a full keyboard. That's one tall phone.

Yes, we know, another day and another iPhone/Verizon rumor -- but this one comes with a photo and a rather interesting backstory.

Here come the puzzle pieces. Verizon has been beefing up on staffing recently, including what's believed to be a near doubling of the service staff assigned to handle number porting requests. All around the iPhone-lovin' world, the expectation is that we'll hear an announcement before the end of the year with a hardware launch in early 2011. (Compare and contrast Big Red's stance on Windows Phone 7.)

Now we hear from a VZW insider that training notices have been sent out to customer service personnel describing an "Iconic Device" that will be available for pre-order on November 9, 2010. The device is expected to be in very high demand, and the training goes on to cover how to handle the pre-orders as they come in. Our source even came through with the internal display you see above.

Update: Reader CJ points out that the Motorola Droid Pro is scheduled to be available for pre-order on the same day, with a similar Iconic Device identifier. The screens might be referring to the same device launch, but they might not.

Is it a mortal lock? No, but Apple does like to announce things on Tuesdays. We'll see.

The Verizon Email above is a fake!!! In the last line of the 1st paragraph it says "device launches so HE receives it on or close to the launch date." No large corporation would refer to it's customers as "HE" in a corporate email. It's someone with a lot of free time and some quality photoshop skills.

Could be a Verizon iPhone, but I can't help but think Steve is gonna want to be the guy to announce it.

And, yes, I read the text in the photograph about "Iconic Devices." Verizon assumes that there will be heavy demand for all smartphones that have user interfaces built around icons. It's not like they will be selling FIOS modems as "iconic devices."

An iconic device for Verizon is a telephone device that uses icons for its interface. It's a generic placeholder name for an unidentified product, not an evaluation of the worth of the device.

The Droid Pro launches then.. Do they call it "iconic" because it looks like a Blackberry?

The exclusivity contract doesn't prevent Apple from selling the iPhone via Verizon or any other carrier. The contract (or nearly any contract for that matter) only requires Apple to pay damages if it violates the contract.

I personally believe that AT&T violated the contract at some point either due to their sub par network, the failure to allow tethering, or data plan pricing increases.

But you do have to worry about bad teeth, running out of butter (since you use it on everything), and of course THE DUTCH!!

It doesn't seem to make good business sense to undercut AT&T sales in front of the holiday shopping season. This hurts AT&T sales and dampens January hype. Announcing Verizon sales in January creates two holiday shopping seasons. Put it in with new iPad and you have a sales tsunami for second qtr sales following the usual gangbuster holiday sales in 4th qtr.

Pretty smart move on the surface... but it's possible that Apple would prefer to take some small losses in favor of gaining a portion of the Verizon holiday market or in favor of longer term strategy.

The 5 year exclusivity contract with ATT isn't scheduled to end until 2012. Until that happens, don't expect a Verizon iPhone, or an iPhone from any other carrier but ATT to be available until then.

The problem with all of these rumors is that none of them mention how or when that contract has changed or mention any thing about it. This rumor has been persistent for the last 2 years. It would gain a lot more credence is a confluence of rumors were also to mention what, exactly is the disposition of the contract with ATT. You can bet ATT will not willfully allow an early termination of this contract with Apple anymore than the would allow an early termination of my contract with them without incurring a hefty fee.

Any announcement about adding additional carriers in the US from Apple won't happen for at least another year.

November 9 will come and go, just like all the other rumored dates before, with no iPhone/Verizon announcement.

If there was any proof of a contract change, then these wouldn't be just rumors.

The fact that these are rumors means there's no proof.

Rinse. Repeat.
