Steve Jobs: AirPrint support for Mac and PCs not canceled
We reported earlier on a rumor suggesting that new iOS 4.2 AirPrint feature that allowed users to print wirelessly to any printer connected to a PC or Mac had been canceled. Because of the rumor, a frustrated MacRumors reader emailed Steve Jobs and suggested that Apple could begin to lose credibility and become known for announcing "vaporware." Steve Jobs replied with an email that simply read: So there you go, folks. If the email's legit (and Steve isn't mixing up the story at all), we will still see AirPrint arrive in iOS 4.2, which is set to drop any day now. Don't forget to join us at 5PM ET this afternoon for our live iOS 4.2 preview show, where we'll discuss all the new features of Apple's next mobile OS.AirPrint has not been pulled. Don't believe everything you read.

Airprint is part of the iOS 4.2 Gold Master ... My friend who is a developer has not said anything about any possible changes between the release and now.
November 10 2010 at 8:09 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt seems like Kyle Anderson's comment is on track. I can confirm (by testing myself) that shared printers works on a pre-release copy of 10.6.5, but not on the released version of 10.6.5.
November 10 2010 at 8:03 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAll mention of shared printing has been removed from the AirPrint section of the iOS 4.2 iPad page...
See, the fact is, Apple was only testing AirPrint with shared printers (SharePrint?) in the betas, but never planned to include it as a feature in the actual release. They got it working in the betas and then pulled it for the final release.
The reason is they are planning to have SharePrint be available as an in-app purchase in the AirPrint manager. It will be available for the magical, revolutionary, amazingly fantastic, really nice, gorgeous, really impressive price of only $29.99. They think it's going to be really great.
So the main apps that you would print from, Pages, Numbers, Keynote are going to see a price hike and will now sell for $49.99? Each?
November 10 2010 at 5:26 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyA) No, the in-app purchase would be in the AirPrint manager you get in the multitasking bar. Technically that is not even an app and thus is impossible.
B) I was clearly kidding. What I said is NOT going to actually happen. It was obviously a joke.
Steve just loves this rumor crap. Anything that generates more buzz about his products is good. That's why they won't put out official info when rumors start flying.
"AirPrint has not been pulled. Don't believe everything you read."
...doesn't say ANYTHING. Nobody SAID Airprint was pulled.
Apple never publically announced the ability to print to a printer shared via Mac/PC, so nobody should be surprised if it doesn't show up in the final release.
November 10 2010 at 4:34 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOops, I was wrong. They did actually promise this in their original press release: http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2010/09/15airprint.html
November 10 2010 at 4:47 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYes they did... Jobs said so in the keynote.
November 10 2010 at 4:53 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyFrom Engadget to TUAW, this has been likely the most poorly reported rumor of the day.
November 10 2010 at 4:19 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIf the ability to print to shared printers is removed, the 99% of iOS users who don't own a HP eprint printer are going to be pissed.
November 10 2010 at 4:15 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyNot really. 98% of those users don't give a crap.
If printing on a regular basis was a requirement those people wouldn't have bought Ipads.
AirPrint DEFINITELY STILL WORKS with SHARED printers on a mac. I just did it with the latest iOS 4.2 GM and the latest 10.6.5 (10H574) build. I printed a web page in mobile safari to a shared lexmark printer. I was also able to print to a HP color printer (not one of the ones listed as compatible). These are all network printers that I shared off my mac.
November 10 2010 at 4:07 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis is still very confusing reporting. "AirPrint" does not necessarily mean, "feature that allowed users to print wirelessly to any printer connected to a PC or Mac." It simply means the ability to print wirelessly from the iOS device. If Steve says AirPrint is still part of 4.2, that does not contradict all of the rumours, as most say that direct printing to certain AirPrint-compatible printer /is/ still part of 4.2. It's the printing to shared printers that's in question, not AirPrint in its entirety.
