TUAW's Daily App: Stenches

We talked to Thunder Game Works way back at this year's WWDC, and they mentioned that they were working on a zombie version of their popular Trenches war strategy game for the iPhone. And it's now out on the App Store. Stenches is much like Trenches in that you guide a group of World War I soldiers through the trenches, but it's unlike Trenches in that it's fully focused on killing zombies. There are over 200 different levels to fight through, special zombie bosses made just for the game, an unlimited mode to fight on through, and everything else you may have played in Trenches. If you didn't play Trenches, you might want to give it a try anyway -- it's a unique little twist on real-time strategy that features some real depth in the action gameplay as well as a grim sense of humor and style.

Stenches is only US$1.99, and for that price, you get both the game and future updates, which will include more game modes, co-op and competitive play, and some more zombie bosses to tangle with. The current game also has Game Center integration, so your friends can check your progress on achievements as well. Great game -- definitely check it out.

No. It is "white knighting". I will bet real American money that not a one of the first seven commenters gave a thought to any veteran related subject - until they saw this review and felt their false sense of right and wrong impugned.

I pointed out real ways they could show support, there are a dozen useful and helpful things, any one of them can do to show support for Veterans - or the homeless - or the disabled - or, or, or...
But instead they get their false sense of moral superiority and rightousness by "defending" Veterans Day. Then they go about their day thinking "I defended Veterans Day - I did a good thing, go USA". Yawn.

Sent the link to two others in my office who have served, both bought the game - one said "Well, there's todays productivity shot all to hell!" Should I go tell him he is being insensitive to Veterans Day? (Notice that by implication, all three of us are at work.)

Its a video game. If you find it offensive, don't buy it. But so far, in the group you are all pretending to care about and defend - veterans - 3 out of 3 of us like the game and appreciate the review and head ups from TUAW.

(they might even have experienced the true "stenches" of war)

Been there, smelled that. Still find the game both amusing and entertaining- and think the name is clever.

And how the heck do you know they're "a bunch who have never served"?

Just a hunch - based on the whining tone.

Thank you very much ghoti - and you are welcome. That always genuinely means a lot to me .

Thank YOU for paying for my college education, two ACL surgeries, some pins in my arm and foot, continued medical and dental care - and eventually my funeral and survivor's benefits to my family.

Its a symbiotic relationship ; )

Try the game - its pretty well done for $1.99.

As a veteran, the son and grandson of a veteran - I find the previous 6 comments to be ridiculous, pretentious, condescending and childish. Yes, it is Veterans Day - BUT, a review of a light-hearted iPhone game is not in any way demeaning to the service and sacrifice of our veterans. What is demeaning to our service is this knee-jerk politically correct whining from a bunch who have never served.

You want to do something on Veterans Day? Donate time or money to the Warrior Fund, Veteran's Guest House, USO, Green Beret Foundation - call your local VFW and ask about volunteer opportunities - contact your local VA and see how you can help.

But drop the "boo-hoo, TUAW reviewed a game on Veterans Day - they hate America" BS. You sound like Faux Newz.

By the way - just bought the game, looks like fun - thanks TUAW for the recommendation.

It's not political correctness, neither is it "whining". Some people here (a majority) have been sensitive enough to point out that deferring this review to another day might have spared a thought for those who could well be emotionally upset on this day of worldwide remembrance, and whose difficult memories may feel cheapened by this "zombies in the trenches", "crosses and all" stuff (they might even have experienced the true "stenches" of war). And how the heck do you know they're "a bunch who have never served"?

It's armistice day, and publishing this today shows a fairly huge failure of good judgement.

Inappropriate to review this silly game on the day when so many are mourning the dead from two world wars.

Not really sure Armistice Day is the appropriate time to run a story about killer zombies in the WWI trenches.

Just saying.

Not really sure 11/11 is the best day for a lighthearted game about trench warfare
