Essential iPhone apps for vegans
Whether you've always been a vegan, or are new to veganism, there are times when eating can be a challenge. Sure, you can plan your meals out and substitute this for that in a meal or recipe, but life happens, so here are the essential iPhone apps for vegans dealing with life happening.
When you don't want to be "that person"
Rather than staring at the menu, and burning a hole through it in the process, or asking the waiter what things can be removed or substituted, you could come into a restaurant fully prepared knowing what is or isn't vegan. This is what VeganXpress (USD $1.99) does.
The app has a list of popular restaurants and marries to it the vegan choices and substitutes available. For example, the app shows that the Fresco Bean Burrito (my personal fast food favorite) at Taco Bell, while the Seven Layer Burrito can be veganized sans cream and cheese.
In addition, the app provides an extensive listing of popular food items, beer and wine that fit the vegan bill. With it, I was able to comfortably buy a bag of Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos, Hot Tamales and a couple of bottles of Chimay.
When you don't want to worry about being "that person"
But there's no need for fakin' a vegan meal when you can "facon" it instead (I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself), and this is what VegOut (USD $2.99) does. Powered by happycow.net, a popular restaurant guide amongst vegans, VegOut uses your iPhone's current location and gives you a list of vegan, vegetarian and vegan-friendly restaurants nearby along with user ratings. Alternatively, you can search for a restaurant, say "Italian" or "Thai," and the app will return a list of restaurants nearby, from which you can get driving directions to via the Google maps app.
When you want to cook
Why go out when you can make it yourself at home? For the Martha Stewart in us, the Vegan Recipe Finder (USD $2.99) by VegWeb and VeganYumYum (free) both are excellent apps. Vegan Recipe Finder stores over 13,000 vegan recipes on your iPhone (no Internet connection needed) and allows search, sort and bookmark them based on popularity. In addition, there's the ability to create a shopping list.
Although less robust (fewer recipes and lacking a shopping list feature) than Vegan Recipe Finder, VeganYumYum dishes up many a recipe to satisfy your vegan appetite. Best yet, it's free, and provides excellent instructions accompanied by elegant photos.
Are you a vegan and can't figure out what to eat? There's an app for that.

A completely inessential app for those suffering from redundant food neurosis.

See, you mistakenly clicked on the article for vegan iPhone apps...
The story for pretentious omnis who don't know what "redundant" means and who have no sense of irony when referring to any app for a smartphone as being "inessential"... well, that story is a couple posts up from this one.
Sorry you got lost! :)
I'm trying really hard to think of a beer that wouldn't be Vegan.
Cheese flavored?
Guinness. Or any beer or wine clarified with isinglass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isinglass) which is made from fish.
Or any beer with honey in it, for that matter.
So yeah. Lots of non-vegan beers. Sapporo is delicious and vegan, though. :)
For a raw vegan recipes try the Saf RecipeBox application, typically well reviewed by our customers (note: we are the developers of the application, the content is provided by the famous London raw vegan restaurant Saf)
November 13 2010 at 2:59 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyTypically a person becomes vegan for health or for moral reasons. Taco Bell and Doritos are neither healthy, nor their companies moral. Why give them money at all? There are innumerable and better tasting chips or burritos from companies who need your support. Those companies are committed to quality ingredients in *EVERY* product they release. Buying these foods is like buying farm fresh organic eggs from a crack dealer. Get your omelette elsewhere.
Also, let me say flat out, I simply do not believe Taco Bell or Doritos. The American food system in particular is a wild west of graft, corruption, and systemic scammery. I'd place a significant wager that they are simply lying. I don't care who vouches for them. End of story. Any serious vegan knows how to navigate the deceptive and dishonest euphemisms, terms, and phrases that these "food" companies use to mask the crap they are putting in food. And if you are not a serious vegan, why be one at all?
A helpful app but keep in mind even though it may be vegan, it is not necessarily healthy. Vegans (myself included) must also be sure to avoid such heavily processed foods that are found in places like Taco Bell. Out of curiosity I pulled up the ingredients for the Fresco Bean Burrito from Taco Bell and it confirmed the importance of avoiding factory food.

Trans-Fat, preservatives, and artificial ingredients are not good for your body. Keep these meals to a minimum and do not make them a part of your regular diet.
i always thought all Doritos products have pork enzymes in their cheese - but i double checked and Spicy Sweet Chili is vegan!
i'm buying this app right now, and buying some of these Doritos too!
I would have assumed the beans in a Taco Bell burrito used lard and were not vegan.

November 12 2010 at 9:58 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe top screenshot is pretty funny. The beans at Taco Bell are made
with the grease leftover from the ground beef they cook on site.
Definitely NOT vegan.
I am totally disappointed with this list.
I, however, may be the only one that thought the headline indicated, "Vegas."
VegEZ is a great App for cooking. It has video tutorials on how to cook the recipies and access to podcasts as well.
