iPhone 3G excluded from AirPlay support

AirPlay Image
Support for Apple's new AirPlay is supposedly excluded from the iPhone 3G, reports 9to5Mac. Designed to let users stream their iTunes library anywhere in their house via WiFi or an Ethernet connection, AirPlay technology will be found in all manner of audio/video equipment in the coming months, including the AirPort Express and Apple TV. However, it looks like it's only going to be for mobile users with the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, not those still using 3Gs. While Apple's own website states that "AirPlay is coming soon and will be available on all iOS 4 devices," which one would imagine includes the 3G iPhone, it looks like it is not meant to be.

Even though Apple is currently dealing with a class-action lawsuit regarding the performance of 3G iPhones after installing iOS 4, seems that they have decided that the iPhone 3G just isn't capable of working properly with AirPlay. Personally, I have been using the iTunes Remote app, multiple AirPort Express units, two Tivoli radio units, and Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil software to stream my music library, so I am looking forward to trying out AirPlay here at home to see how it compares.

That is, when I finally get around to downloading iTunes 10.1 with AirPlay support, which was made available earlier today.

I'm surprised the 3G even gets 4.2, personally.

Holding back features for future sales, updates to updates, promised features that are then removed, lack of support on old hardware and software. Oh the memories; sounds like our old Microsoft overloads during their hay-days of the 90s and early 2000s. I for one welcome our new Apple overlords and await a future when we talk about Apple the way we now talk about Microsoft (which is already happening) while some new company (maybe Google?) will become the new hipster with the "better" operating system, and cooler new products and a next "Joe-smoe Jobs" becomes the next face of innovation. The circle of life continues.

That's funny! Isn't Google the company that has been taken to task for illegally gathering information through Wi-fi sniffing? Didn't they violate Gmail users' privacy by making everyone's profiles public when they bungled the Buzz launch? Isn't it Google who claims to be completely open and transparent regarding Android, meanwhile the only Android tablet that can access the Marketplace is the Galaxy Tab?

Apple hasn't come close to being as evil as Google has. Why don't you run along now, the adults are speaking…

Does that include 2nd Gen, iPod touches? AKA 3rd Gen 8GB iPod touches?

THe reason Apple probabbly still supports the iPhone 3G is because they were still selling them as of May of this year.

iPhone 3G doesn't have h.264 or AAC encoding hardware. Best it would be able to do is streaming of preencoded content. Perhaps Apple decided that distinction is too difficult to communicate to users and decided to disable AirPlay entirely

Apple got burned promising too much for the 3G with iOS 4.0, now it's EOL time.

Can you stream video audio to an Airport Express? I can do it with Airfoil but it'd be nice if it was built into iTunes.

It's no surprise that the 3G is LIMITED. It's OLD hardware. I wish people would stop treating it like it's supposed to be at the same level as the 3GS and 4. Jesus.
