Wall Street Journal confirms Beatles on iTunes

Ethan Smith of the Wall Street Journal writes that iTunes will soon be carrying the Beatles catalog, according to "people familiar with the situation." According to Smith, this deal was finalized recently -- as late as last week -- between Apple and EMI group.

If so, this plays into the Beatles-style hints of today's teaser announcement on the Apple home page and supports the notion that iTunes will begin selling the Beatles music as early as tomorrow.

If it really *is* the Beatles...
I'll be so excited! Ripping CD's is so 1996. Now I'll be able to buy tracks I probably already own from iTunes.774 (7.0%)
There better be something else announced as well, be it The Cloud or AirPlay.4546 (41.0%)
Whoopie freaking doo. Yawn.3810 (34.4%)
Whatever.1835 (16.6%)
I'll just tell you in the comments.110 (1.0%)

Thanks, badtzmaru

Mark Mulligan of research firm Forrester is not impressed. But his argument sweeps away the entire history of art as useless junk.

I can't believe the amount of ignorance shown here about the Beatles. They are hands down the most influential band ever. If you do not know or recognize this, you probably have never been "turned on". And yes, it is a fact, not opinion, that you are missing out on life in general.

The Beatles have been and remain one of the top selling artists of all time without releasing new material. In this case, the music speaks for itself. It truly is timeless.

I'll be extremely disappointed if that's all it is...what a letdown.

I CAN'T imagine that's all it is. The addition of the Beatles to the catalog is certainly not something that I'll "never forget."

How else should/could Apple announce this? You need to look at the bigger picture. It's not just "The Beatles" it's really the last major band to be added to iTunes, which is really a bigger deal for the store than anything else. Apple didn't call the press together. They didn't call a town hall. They simply put up an ad for "whatever" a mere 24 hours before an announcement. For Apple, there's no way to create buzz without the entire Internet speculating about the next big thing. In other words, no one asked you to get your wildest hopes up.

You can buy the whole Beatles 16 disc catalog remastered on CD for under 125.00. As a bonus you get dvd's as well. If your a Beatles fan that is the way to go since you get set your on rip rates rather than rely on Apple
