Today is just another day I will forget

When Apple teased "Tomorrow is just another day. That you'll never forget" on their home page yesterday I hoped it was going to be something really cool -- like cloud-based iTunes or a subscription iTunes service. When the news began to leak out that the event was the Beatles coming to iTunes finally it was cool, but a day I'll never forget? Nope.
Don't get me wrong, it's great to finally have the Beatles on iTunes, but Apple, lets keep this in check. For $149 and the click of a button it's nice to get all of the Beatles tracks from iTunes if I want them, but most Beatles fans had the band's entire discography ripped when MP3s started going mainstream back in 2001. Heck, hardcore fans probably had their tracks encoded at such high levels in Ogg Vorbis or FLAC that they needed a separate hard drive just to contain their Beatles tunes (and if they don't yet, Amazon will help them out -- today they lowered their Beatles Stereo Box Set to only $129).
Seven years ago a Beatles/iTunes announcement might have earned the "never forget" slogan, but not today in 2010. And while it's only been three hours since the release, the iTunes Store music charts confirms that this isn't the earth-shattering news it was made out to be. Not one Beatles song has cracked the Top 10 list yet, while a new song from Katy Perry or the Black Eyed Peas usually shoots up the charts within minutes of being released -- and without taking up 40% of the real estate on the iTunes Music Store homepage or the front page of Apple.com like the Fab Four has.
I also want to point out that for all the hoopla over today's "event" one thing that could have made it somewhat memorable is a Beatles-branded iPod touch. If a band-branded iPod is good enough for some guys from Dublin, surely a group of four lads from Liverpool deserve one too.
Beatles: glad to have you on iTunes. Apple: I've already forgotten something you said I wouldn't. Wish I could remember what it was...

You missed the fact that the "Tomorrow is just another day" was a Beatles lyric reference. Don't take it so literally. It fit the "we have an announcement tomorrow" vibe they were going for. Obviously they had to turn it around, otherwise they'd just have the first part.

Apple makes an announcement Monday late afternoon (that's when i saw it, maybe it was earlier) about some info they are going to release 12 hours later. TUAW and tons of other sites start speculating and then are let down by their own speculation?
Apple didn't hype it.
Beatles on iTunes is a Jobs pet project I would wager. It's a big deal, look at how it's dominating the charts on iTunes right now.
The Beatles are awesome and now it will be easier for a whole generation of new fans to get their music, although many of them will probably get songs and not the albums which is sad to an old fogey like me.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Spot on the money Auntie. I certainly didn't feel the earth shake and besides, when you're on the magical mystery tour who knows where you got on!? Big news for Apple but not Beatles fans. Best wishes, your favorite nephew.

They are the most prolific musical act of the past 100 years. Not having them was an asterisk when labeling iTunes as a music retailer. Now it has been dropped.
See the big picture.
Michael Grothaus, you should aspire to write better opinion pieces than this.
what a dumb announcement. Yay! I could now buy music I already purchased from other sources. I hear this digital download thingy is getting pretty big, good thing we got the Beatles. I understand a special day, but there is no reason for a press conference, this is the kind of crap that will get the media and myself to pay less attention to future releases from Apple. Gone now are the days of hitting refresh on the browser to see what happens.
November 17 2010 at 1:05 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyCouldn't disagree more. I'm thrilled that the Beatles are on iTunes and I'm sure that Apple will do a great job of introducing them to younger generations. EMI was slow to get with the program, but that's no fault of Apple's. Let's give them a chance and see what they come up withâ¦

The Beatles were big. Unless you lived during those times, you don't realize what an impact they had on society. I admit, I don't understand the effect Frank Sinatra had on my father's generation, but I've never discounted, or looked down upon anyone for liking it.
If you like the Beatles, this is great news, even if you own all their material. I think one could appreciate that now, a new generation can experience the music that changed the world. I don't know why anyone would be against that, unless you just see the world with a negative view to begin with.
If you don't like the Beatles, or somehow felt let down that the announcement didn't include the things you wanted, then that's life, stuff happens. The world doesn't involve around what you want.
As far as the charts, go back to the Billboard charts of the sixties, and you'll see the Beatles dominated them. To be even discussing them over forty years later is a testament to their influence.
Preach it bruthah!

The Beatles albums were only digitally remastered last year, so anyone who claims to have ripped the Beatles albums years ago and is fine with the sound quality is missing out. And the Beatles are a big deal to all musicians and anyone who loves music, not just "baby boomers." This is a big deal and as a musician and a music fan, I'm very excited.

It was very nice of Apple to post that 480i copy of the concert for me to grab a copy of off the web page though :)
