Hulu Plus launches at $7.99, refunds early adopters
After much waiting and speculation, Hulu Plus was released for the iPad and iPhone on a preview basis in June. Today, Hulu has opened the service up to everyone and dropped the monthly fee to US$7.99 from $9.99. Additionally, those who have been paying $9.99 will see a rebate on their next bill.
Hulu Plus on the iPad and iPhone (here's our review) streams TV shows, movies and documentaries to the devices over Wi-Fi and 3G. It's smart enough to pick up where you left off, should you get interrupted, on either device. While the movie selection is rather limited (most were new to me), the television library is great, offering both classic and contemporary shows, many in their full runs.
It will be interesting to see if the price drop attracts additional "cord-cutters" who are looking to escape costly cable bills and adopt services like Hulu, Netflix and Amazon Video On Demand. As Read Write Web points out, the proliferation of cord-cutters is really a myth. A recent Nielsen study found that the majority of Internet TV viewers (84%) say that they are still watching the same amount of traditional TV as before and do not intend to cancel their current cable subscriptions.
In addition to this announcement, Hulu has stated that updates to its iOS apps are forthcoming, and that they've formed a new partnership with Roku.

I've been doing the $9.99/mo for Hulu Plus since July and I do watch more show than I did before. We only have basic cable (2-13 and a few more channels) and the expanded availability of show I can watch online (via web or PS3 and iPad) with Hulu Plus has been nice.
Of course, it would be nice to watch all Hulu shows on my PS3 and iPad, but I'm sure the expansion will happen soon enough. Also would like TBS, TNT and AMC shows like Conan and Mad Men, but again, waiting for licensing deals on those may take a while.
As for those that are looking for a better deal, BillG mentioned it above with the cable being a paid service, yet it's littered with ads. Hulu's ads are short and few, which is nothing compared to what I see on the cable channels of 4 mins of ads during show segments.
It seems the complaints here are to get the price to as cheap as it can get... even free even. Maybe the freedom of the web has spoiled us to wanting it all for gratis. I'm ok with paying and now it's $2 a month less. I'm keeping it and being patient for more shows and on more devices.
I haven't found anything on Hulu I was willing to pay for.

Once the 360 app releases, i will consider it.

November 17 2010 at 1:43 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI'm watching the same amount of traditional TV as I was before I got Netflix several years ago... None. Zero. Ziltch.
With Netflix streaming and Hulu.com (I don't care for the Plus service), I'm watching more shows than I was a few years ago. Of course, more than zero happens to be just 1 or 2 for me.
Get it on the new AppleTV, then we'll talk $7.99/mo. But do it fast, as once a jailbroken ATV starts running plain Hulu, there's no way I'm going to look back.

November 17 2010 at 12:36 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Reply$7.99 still sounds high. But I'm also not at all clear on what $7.99 gets you.
Hulu is accessible for free on a computer, but not an iOS devices, so I understand that part of what $7.99 gets you is access to Hulu on an iOS device. That /might/ be worth a couple of bucks, but a subscription fee to access an otherwise free service is a hard pill to swallow.
So how is the content different? I get the impression that Hulu+ has more content, but I also get the impression that Hulu+ doesn't have all of the content that Hulu does which, if true, makes zero sense.
Does the Hulu app support video out?
Do you need an iOS device to get Hulu+ or can you access the "+" content from a computer?
All-in-all, I can see where you'd want Hulu on your iPad/iPhone, and I can see where you'd be willing to pay for it, but unless you're watching most of your content on your iPad, it's still a little much. The back catalog sounds great, but the most useful function of Hulu for me (and, I'm assuming, for a lot of people) is catching current shows that you've missed, which means that unless you are one of these "cord cutters," you're already either paying for access to this stuff once, or you're already getting it for free.
And Tivo lets me skip the ads.
So, ad-supported content that mirrors what I already pay for, watchable on a device that's a fraction of the size of my television. I know I'm a cheapskate, but I guess I just don't have the consumption habits that makes this make any kind of sense to me.
I fail to see what a price drop is thought to do to attract people to internet-only television. People were sitting around saying, "ya know, if they'd knock another $2 off that Hulu Plus, we can just get rid of cable"? I dropped DirecTV over a year ago, use Hulu's free version a lot, and I'm still not signing up unless there's more value than a back catalog. Charging money while still showing ads just makes Hulu a poor man's version of a cable company.
November 17 2010 at 12:15 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDude, cable charges you money while showing ads! I am paying $17/month for a few ads instead of $100/month for mega-ads and get to chose what I want to watch and where.
Roku+Hulu+Hetflix+iPhone+iPad is a win as far as I am concerned. And, the amount I will save in a year of being off cable will pay for all the toys I enjoy watching on. And, have some left over to get a new TV.
