iPhone 4.2 how-to: Setting custom SMS alert tones

One of the less-heralded new features in iOS 4.2.1 for the iPhone is the addition of a slew of new SMS message tones, along with the ability to assign text tones to particular contacts. The expansion of choice is welcome, and I hate to look gift text tones in the mouth, but there are still some frustrations in the mix.

The biggest issue is that as far as we can tell, 3GS owners aren't getting the new ringtones at all; only iPhone 4 users are seeing them. It's not clear yet if this is permanent or temporary.

Even if you have the new tones, what you see is what you get; you still can't add your own custom SMS tones without jailbreaking. For another thing, as Chris Rawson pointed out last week, these new SMS alerts are mostly freakishly long -- who has time to wait for 10 seconds of music whenever they get a text? It is a puzzlement.

Update: Reader Peter Park, a database admin by trade, wrote in to say how much he appreciates the longer alert tones -- when you're depending on an SMS message to wake you up in the middle of the night when a server is offline, you want to make sure you hear it. Point taken!

You may find one of the new SMS tones to your liking; for my money, most of them sound like they might have been recorded between takes on the Looney Tunes scoring stage, although "Anticipate" is a dead ringer for the Stair Dismount music sting. The only one that I feel like I might be able to stick with for a while is "Noir," which is short enough not to drive me bonkers.

Whether you stick with the classic alerts or dip into the new and "improved" ones, you can still have some fun assigning specific tones to particular people -- very handy if you want to make sure that your spouse or your boss always get your attention in a hurry. Read on for the simple steps needed to set this up.

You can set your SMS preference globally in the Settings app, under Sounds. By default, all incoming texts will alert you with this sound, so choose carefully.

To assign an alert sound to a particular contact, tap the contact in your Contacts app and then click the Edit button at the upper right corner of the screen.

Scroll down in the contact detail until you see the "text tone" field -- it's right underneath the ringtone field. Tap the text tone field to bring up the scrolling list of available sounds.

Tap the sound you want for this contact, and click Save. That's it!

You can also use the Favorites screen in the Phone app to quickly get to the contact detail/edit screens for your most-called contacts.

Is there an app that I can download so I can look for a new ringtone for my iphone. I don't like any of the ringtones that come with my iphone, but I don't see an option to "add a ringtone." Any help is appreciated!

Disagree--traditional tones and settings before this updated also allowed users to continue getting an alert for the same msg until you open it. At this point, I would have rather had some custom email notifications than the SMS. What a sad update.

This is one of the things I have been waiting for to come to the iPhone for YEARS. Blackberry has had this feature FOREVER. Now Apple just needs to add a third choice to contacts -- "EMAIL TONE" -- so you can have a custom alert tone sound when an email arrives from that contact. Again, BB has had this forever. These 2 features alone are what prevents me from switching to the iPhone.

Now if you could also assign your own custom tone (instead of the prepackaged ones), WITHOUT jailbreaking. Come on, Apple....

With regard to adding new SMS tones you said

"Even if you have the new tones, what you see is what you get; you still can’t add your own custom SMS tones without jailbreaking. "

I immediatly brighteded up and Clicked on the Hyper link only to find this ,

"To follow this tutorial you will need to have jailbroken your iPhone and installed OpenSSH"

Please get your facts right or attach the correct hyperlink .

Thanks :)

What I'd really like is a way to set different vibrate patterns for texts vs alarms vs emails, like a single medium buzz for email, two medium-short buzzes for a text and 3 super-short buzzes in quick succession for an event alarm.

C'mon Apple, my old Kyocera 7135 smartphone could do that 10 years ago!

The hardware in the 3Gs and earlier iPhones cannot handle Text Tones, Airplay, and Free Find My iPhone evidently, or that will probably be the line an Apple spokesman will give if anyone ever gets the opportunity to ask them a question about it. But based on past experience, no one will have this opportunity, nor will they ask this important question when they do, for fear of never ever being given an opportunity to ask another question in their life. Lest anyone think I'm an Apple-basher, I have owned an original iPhone and currently use a year-old 3Gs. The very idea that after this short a time this phone is being relegated to non-supported status galls me to no end!

Apple is a for-profit company. No matter how well (or poor) there products are designed, what matters is their bottom line. Giving your 3G[S] HDR, find my iPhone, new SMS ringtones, and any other feature that seems reasonable to implement from a software standpoint decreases their sales because it means you'll hold onto your phone quite a bit longer than they want you to. That means decreased sales. That means unhappy investors.

It's not rocket science, and certainly what every other company does. There always needs to be enough reason for you to upgrade to the next thing. Otherwise, bye bye marketshare. The war between manufacturer and consumer ensues..

I got excited when I read "custom.". To me this means create your own. I'm gonna miss my xbox achievement sound when I lose my jailbreak by upgrading.
