TiVo announces iPad app to control TiVo box

If you're like most iPad users, then you probably surf the web and check out IMDB with your iPad while watching anything that might be showing on the television. TiVo knows this, embraces this, and wishes to support this. They want to make the experience between your television and your iPad even closer.

TiVo announced Monday a new, upcoming iPad app that will let you use many features of the TiVo service all on your iPad, without ever interrupting what's happening on your larger television screen.

The TiVo iPad application will allow you to browse TiVo's program guide, schedule recordings, remotely control your TiVo unit, and browse your library of recorded shows. Additionally, the app will search both broadcast TV and premium services like Netflix, let you check out the cast and crew information of any shows you're watching, as well as schedule shows to be recorded while you're on the road.

Upcoming does mean that it's not out yet, but TiVo says we'll be notified in the customer newsletter as soon as the app is available. It will be interesting to get our hands on the TiVo app since it really could open up a lot of powerful features.

The TiVo Premiere is the smallest TiVo yet, a thin and diminutive box that holds only one CableCard and still lacks Wi-Fi (a $90 802.11n adapter will be available this May, plus you can pick up a $30 TiVo powerline adapter). It hides a multicore processor inside that drives a new, HD UI that previews your program at all times.

I have such mixed feelings about this. I have two series 2 and one TiVo HD each with lifetime service. My original TiVo has a dead hard drive but I can still bring it back to life. I have been tempted to buy a Premiere for months, but this development has been the only thing thing that really makes me want one. I will probably buy one begrudgingly because I really do wish that it was supported on all units that have ethernet connections.

FYI - Tivo is running a deal right now on the Premeire. $0 if you sign up for $19.99/mo for 2 year commitment. Not the best deal in the world (since older service was $13/mo), but made me pull the trigger.

I received it from Tivo within 24 hours of ordering. They shipped extremely fast.

Premiere only? Boooo!

TiVo disappoints... again.

Have TWC DVR in the bedroom and TiVo HD in the living room. I've been very disappointed in the whole TiVo experience. I don't consider TiVo to be a "premium" box at all these days. With all the on-demand content the cable providers are offering, along with all the streaming services that are built into the current crop of HDTVs, I'm hard pressed to see the benefit of go with TiVo. And this BS making this a Premier only App is sooo lame. I'll probably be going back TWC in the living room and be done with TiVo.

I JUST installed a new Tivo Premiere this morning in my home theater to replace my old Series 3 (moved it into our living room).

I cannot wait to get the iPad app. I hope that it can be used as a keyboard for the Premiere (versus buying that overpriced remote).

Also, I hate that Tivo does not have a way to transfer Season Passes from one unit to another. Ugh.

Just hope that Virgin Media's Tivo box supports this whenever it comes out.

Yeah, like he said .... Premiere ONLY. Weak, TiVo. I'm starting to wish someone would come along and give TiVo some serious competition.

Seriously, making it suitable only for Premiere boxes is BS. It's not as if the HD box was/is a cheap alternative, not to mention that it's in no way obsolete. Looks like TiVo has taken a page from Slingbox's customer service department. Boo. Big, big boo.

Too bad TiVo is overpriced. Why I was paying $13/month for an IPG is beyond me.

Tivo premiere only. I guess the Tivo HD box I bought a year ago is obsolete. WTF Tivo?
