iPad keyboard has broken shift-drag capitalization under iOS 4.2.1
The iOS 4.2.1 update for my iPad brought many welcome features -- and one unwelcome one. Since upgrading, I have found myself unable to use the handy shift-drag trick to type capitals. Now, I move my finger down to shift, place it on the screen, drag to the letter I want, release it -- and get something random. Rarely, it's the character I was aiming for. More often, it's some other character I dragged my finger over on the way to it. Even more often, it's something nothing at all.
The video shows the problem in action. This is really quite annoying -- I failed to log into a server several times this morning, and it wasn't until I watched the password box like a hawk that I could deduce why. Fix it please, Apple!

I use this a lot on the iPhone especially for passwords. Now I am using an iPad and keep forgetting it is broken on it.
Well worth the post, not sure why anyone would not want to use it.
I can't understand why anyone needs to complain about raising awareness of the issue, especially for people like me. Who googled to find out if it was just broken for me.
Waiting the NEXT Updates is the best option

return to the switch button would be great... I know the mute button
for iphone is handy but completely and utter useless for my uses on ipad...
please Apple let us at least choose whether we want it for screen lock or mute, this would be great !
This works for all the modifier keys although I don't see it as useful with the shift key. The '.?123' key, yes.
Anyhow it works for me.
Problem demonstrated in Safari "Google" field.
Very interesting that the feature works in some apps, still works fine with the ".?123" key, and is slightly-less error prone with the first letter of words. Surprising that they keyboard handling code isn't fully standardized across keyboard displays or even across apps.
All this hating seriously has to stop. None of us have lived each other's lives. We haven't experienced every possibility that existence has to offer. Give a guy the benefit of the doubt rather than attacking him for not being just like you.
Thank you, Trane. I have to admit I was rather taken surprised by the eruption of "this is a stupid feature and the writer is stupid for using it" in the comments here. This is a minor feature that I occasionally use -- notably when standing with the iPad, holding it with one hand and typing with the other -- and it's a little annoying that it's seemingly been broken in the iOS4.2 update.

Hi Avi! That's great if you want to type LOTS OF CAPS IN A ROW but not so useful for typing jUst ThE odD cApitAl letter, as is often the case with passwords or with a lot of technical jargon, and indeed even Apple product names (AirPrint, MacBook, iMac, ...).
November 25 2010 at 10:25 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOk so please all go to the seatings hit general then Key B the switch the caps lock on and U r ok to go :)
November 25 2010 at 4:36 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis feature has been documented many times in blogs and forums. I use it all the time on the iPhone and it still works for me on iOS 4.2.
I find it more useful for punctuation. Hold the .?123 key - slide up/right and it enters a full stop (or 'period' for anyone celebrating Thanksgiving today) and instantly returns to the alpha keyboard. Faster than tap shift, tap full stop, tap shift again - once you get used to it.
There seem to be a number of keyboard/touchscreen anomalies. In Safari, touching a link randomly brings up the wrong page. The touch-slide technique that is the subject of this post works at times in Safari and at other times, not. It's a quicker way to shift for those who are used to it, so this is not a happy development. Touching some letters, some of the time, in Safari for me causes an uncommanded retraction of the keyboard. When that happens, some of the times you bring it back it comes up in upper case, again without user command.
