Kids 6-12 want iPads and iPod touches, survey says

Go figure -- this holiday season, kids want the priciest, hottest consumer electronics going. That's according to a new Nielsen survey, which says that across the demographic of kids 6-12, the iPad is the hottest gift in town, with 31 percent angling for a future purchase of Apple's tablet. The iPod touch is another big gift want as well, topping both the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP this year. And the iPhone is also on the list, with 20 percent of those polled hoping to see a smartphone under the tree.

I don't have kids, but it seems a little nuts to me that six to twelve year olds are hoping for devices like the iPad and the iPhone. Then again, when I was a kid, there was nothing we wanted more than a new SNES or a Sega Genesis, and we still wound up getting things like books and sweaters anyway. So just because these kids want a big ticket Apple device doesn't necessarily mean it'll be showing up under the tree later this year.

But you never know -- those kids go to school for like eight hours a day, right? Maybe while they're away at school, Mom and Dad get to use the iPad for themselves.

That's the best excuse for dads to get what they want... Tell the wife it's for the kids, and u get the thumbs up..... My 1yr old wants a tree-stand for hunting... I wonder if that will work.

What's most interesting is that the widely acclaimed as a success Xbox doesn't even show up in top choices. These kids must read the most accurate business news which reports that the device has actually lost billions for MSFT - an amazing measure of "success".

Wow, the image used in this article would look a lot better as a png instead of jpg!

"Interest in buying in the next 6 months"

More like interest in having their parents buy for them, you mean. Not many 6-12 year olds have that kind of money.

I got an iPad for my wife a little over a month ago and my 4 year old has logged many more hours than the wife. Video in the car, Pocket Tanks, Eastern Drawing, and many interactive books...he quickly figured out how to navigate and start programs and movies and can keep himself occupied when travelling. Intuitive interface indeed!

So while I might not buy one FOR a young child, I certainly see why they would want theses devices and there is something to be said for letting them use them.

I say I bought an iPad for my wife, but really, my 6 year old daughter uses it more. It's actually a great device for kids and is her primary entertainment device, trumping the TV, computer and any other toys or games.

Just today my soon to be 7 yr old (1/6) Daughter asked for an iPod Touch for her Birthday. We have enough tech in the house so I think I'll stick to plan A - a new bike.
