SlingPlayer for iPad now available [update: does not work with PRO]

Just a week after the teaser video was released, SlingPlayer for iPad (US$29.99) is officially available. This app lets you stream anything that comes from your Slingbox SOLO, PRO, or PRO-HD to and iPad via Wi-Fi or 3G. Thirty bucks is kind of high, and the app isn't universal so you're looking at sixty bucks if you want to toss an iPhone into the mix.

Note that the Slingbox Classic, AV, PRO and TUNER are not supported for use with SlingPlayer Mobile. If you own one of those you're not completely out of luck; you can take advantage of an upgrade offer to save $50 on a new Slingbox SOLO or Slingbox PRO-HD.

[Updated regarding Slingbox PRO compatibility. The app description from Sling suggests that the app is compatible with the Slingbox PRO when used on the iPad, but our readers report differently. We apologize for any confusion, and we are contacting Sling to find out what, if anything, they intend to do to compensate PRO owners who bought the app in error.]

I own two Slings, a Pro and an AV, both blocked in the app from connecting. Everytime a post to Slings forum is placed their mods delete. I have been so happy for my Slings, which are placed in the US, while I am in Europe, However, this latest scam will cause me to never recommend them again. If the Sling logic held true, then my new laptop with Full HD should not be allowed to connect either, but it actually does. Take a look thru the discussions to see all the probelems they are having with this HD, before you invest in this. Most people are not seeing any HD video at all. Most people do not have the upstream bandwidth to stream HD either. It seems like a scam to get people to purchase a new disposable peace of hardware that will be obsolete as soon as a new fancy device, like the IPAD comes out.
Yes I am disappointed, because I was looking forward to this app for a while now.

I got peeved by this when the iPhone app came out. I had an original Slingbox and the new models added *nothing* for the UK market. I refused to buy a new Slingbox hardware when the old one was working perfectly. So I now have EyeTV Sat and it's brilliant. I can stream live TV to my computer or iOS device, and I can put recordings on using iTunes to watch during my commute. Do yourself a favour and get an EyeTV :D

This irresponsible and inaccurate article clearly contains false information and it needs to be corrected immediately.

I was also eagerly awaiting this app and searched for it on my iPad this morning. Although it's way overpriced I installed it directly from the iTunes search - and there was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to inform me that I was wasting $30.00 because my SlingBox Pro is not supported.

I'm trying to get a refund but this has been a(nother) very negative Sling experience.

One other thing, $30 is a lot of money for an app when you consider that they give a computer app away for free.

I ask every Slingbox owner to boycott this app until Slingbox at least makes the phone & Pad app universal.

Please go to
http://www.slingmedia.com/get/contact-bizdev
and send these greedy folks your opinion on this and ask them to make the apps universal

Thanks

Sorry but what was once a great company, was bought up by Dish Network and quickly turned into a monster. I had a very bad experience with Dish Network, who wanted us to pay $1,500 for new receivers because the ones that we bought in 2005 were rendered obsolete because it loss a lawsuit to TiVo.

In 2008 at MacWorld, I paid a visit to the original Slingbox people who had a booth, who were at the time working on the Iphone app. It worked great with my old Sling Box that was bought in 2007 and it also worked off the AT&T network and it was only suppose to be $9.99. Two months later, Slingbox was bought up by Dish Network, all of the people that I met at MacWorld disappeared and the company turned rogue. Six months later they came out with a Iphone app that was $30, didn't hook up to the AT&T network and only worked on new Slingbox. They came out with the excuse that we all had to buy a new sling box, which was double the price of the original box. Yes they will give us a $50 upgrade vocher if you buy it online, but of course the online price is about $60 more than the Best Buy price.

So it doesn't surprise me that you have to pay for everything, a Iphone app, the Ipad app and so on.

Because of all this again I have a bad taste in my mouth for Dish Network, who are greedy scum. I am going to use that old slingbox, which has the same features and works like the new Sling Box. For free it hooks up to my MacPro, so I still can access my old Slingbox on the road for free.

Yes everything changes and technology changes at a fast pace, but I am sick of greedy folks that don't allow for us to use old equipment that still works fine.

So for those with a slingbox, remember my tale. You can get a free app that runs on a computer so save the $30 for the Ipad app. Oh, it's only a matter of time before companies like Verizon hooks up my Fioz box to an Ipad and does the same thing at a lot less cost.

The Slingbox is nice technology, but you have to have a fairly decent upload speed at the receiver end. And if you have trouble, Sling support will want to hose you $49 to fix it.

It's a decent product but a crappy company.

I have no complaints with DISH Network, just the Sling end of it.

I don't understand why the the slingbox classic does not work with the ipad version when it works perfectly fine with the iphone version of the app. Oh well, I wouldn't pay another $30 for this anyway. The iPhone version works well enough for me on the iPad.

Why pay a grand total of $280 for minimal improvement? $299 for the new slingbox - $50 discount for upgrading then another $30 for the ipad app.

Are you sure that it doesn't work with the older model slingboxes? I have a slingbox AV and although it's not "supported" with the iphone slingplayer, it still works perfectly.

I get a message every once in a while that says something like: "Your slingbox is not supported but it still may work". Then it fires up and I'm watching tv with full working Tivo remote. I can't test since I don't have an iPad :(

Thanks, TUAW. Installing now.

I've been waiting for this. The upscaled iPhone version was fine for a while, but it's time to take advantage of the iPad's increased real estate to make this app even better.

This is perfect for people who will be doing a lot of holiday traveling but want to keep up with their shows/sports teams/etc.
