iOS 4.2.1 brings baseband signature check, unlockers warned to wait
With the release of iOS 4.2.1, Apple has again gained the upper hand in the ongoing cat and mouse battle against iPhone unlockers. While the U.S. Library of Congress has decreed that users who choose to unlock their mobile devices for use on alternative networks cannot be prosecuted under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), there was unfortunately no prohibition on companies locking phones in the first place.
As a result, Apple has continued to tweak its locking mechanisms with every new release of iOS, including the one released earlier this week. Starting with iOS 4.2.1, the main part of the operating system checks the baseband firmware at startup, and if it doesn't match an expected signature, the phone will not boot. In the event of a failure, the iPhone will be stuck in recovery mode until it is restored to its original form. The baseband firmware is the portion of iOS that actually controls the cellular radio hardware, and this is what must be hacked in order to allow iPhones to be used on carriers other than AT&T (or whichever overseas provider sold the phone).
This change could potentially make things much more complicated for developers creating unlocking tools. However, if past history is anything to go by, it will be more a matter of when and not if they succeed. In the meantime, those that are using iPhones on T-Mobile USA or other non-original carriers will want to sit tight on iOS 4.1 or earlier.

4.2.1 update killed one of my favorite Email features, "DELETE ALL". The Delete All feature was a feature that Apple appears to have hidden*, but I found it, and I used it ALL the time, now with the 4.2.1 update it's been removed. :-(
I don't know if it was an intentional removal or not, but I am left wondering 2 things:
1. Why was this feature ever hidden to begin with?
2. Why is it gone now?
* you had to select edit, check an Email to delete, press and hold the Delete button, uncheck the the email that you had checked to be deleted, release the Delete button and then a "Delete All" option would appear.
Why don't the people who want to use their phone on non-AT&T networks just get a phone from Canada/UK/Australia where they are sold unlocked from the Apple store? Surely the market for soft unlocks has to be shrinking.

November 26 2010 at 9:32 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyActually, the Unlocked phones from CAN are cheaper than in the US, given the currency rates (last I checked). HOWEVER, it's just a supreme PITA. I have a friend going to CAN and she is going to grab me an unlocked iPhone4...but unless you have some friends up there, or live close enough to drive, you will be paying someone a premium.

November 26 2010 at 7:19 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI am surprised Apple hasnt changed the iOS main firmware so it will refuse to boot and failt to work if the baseband version doesnt match (i.e. if the baseband doesnt match, the messages/commands/calls sent to the baseband wont be what the old baseband wants and hence it will be unable to properly function)
Thank you guys for the help. I used a different computer and it worked.
November 25 2010 at 3:42 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhen I first installed the 4.2 GM, I kept getting iTunes errors (which left my phone in restore mode). I ended up going to another machine to do the update (after first trying to uninstall/reinstall iTunes, etc).
Since then, I noticed that firmware umbrella had patched my "/private/etc/hosts" with an override to "gs.apple.com". I don't know if that was the reason, but I suspected it. I removed that line. When I updated to 4.2.1, all worked fine.
So, I suggest you look at this if you are getting iTunes errors during the upgrade and you've ever had the firmware umbrella (save SHSH utility) installed.
On Tuesday at 2:30pm I decided to update my iPhone 3G to the latest iOs(4.2). It previously had iOS 4.1 non-hacked. It is now Thursday 12:00pm and my phone has not completed the update, I tried to restore it and nothing. The status bar on the iPhone is stuck in the middle. It now has the iTunes logo and a connection logo on the screen. In iTunes, I get an error code that reads "1611". My phone was working fine before I tried to do the update. This iOS 4.2 killed my phone. What should I do? Get a new phone? Of course, thats probably what they want me to do. But, can it be fixed?

I'm just upset with a bunch of other folks that my Photos App has inverted my Events. Now the new events are all the way on the bottom with no way to fix it.
Why the change??? Why mess this up???
Mine was always that way.

November 25 2010 at 12:01 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWeren't laws passed YEARS ago that said carriers had to unlock phones after a certain period of time? Am I crazy? What happened to that?
November 25 2010 at 10:42 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyUm, no [I'm assuming you are in the US]. The best you get in the US is that you have the legal right to jailbreak your iPhone to run software not available from the iTS.
In Canada, you can buy an unlocked iPhone for full price, but there is no legal right (and hence, none of the carriers will do it) to have your phone unlocked once your 'subsidy' contract in completed.
Here in New Zealand it is illegal for the carriers to lock phones. As long as you pay out your contract Vodafone have to unlock your phone if you ask.
This is just another case of AT&T dictating design again for the rest of the world, just like they did with feathering.
This information isn't correct, as there are already iPhone 4 phones with 4.2.1 running with baseband 01.59 with no problems. The issue appears to be that the firmware installation process checks to make sure the baseband installs. However, if you already have a setup such as 4.1 with 01.59 (achieved with methods such as TinyUmbrella), you can use the Update process to update 4.1 to 4.2.1. Update differs from Restore in that your phone's memory isn't erased (apps, media, etc. remain in place, with no need to sync them back on to the phone). It also touches only the main firmware and not the baseband. Not all firmware updates allow for Update, but 4.1 to 4.2.1 does.
