Patents aplenty: iPhone radio, fiber optic MagSafe, 3D without glasses

Apple's patent team must be cramming before the end of the year, because this past week we've seen a flood of patent applications come out of Cupertino. First up, Apple has patented a radio system in the iPhone (finally!), allowing you to listen to standard FM and AM broadcasts on the smartphone. The patent itself also includes an idea for a satellite radio connection, as well as a card to plug into Macs that would do the same thing. And there's a radio map idea as well, that would chart and let you browse nearby radio stations. Pretty cool idea -- hopefully we'll see it in the next iPhone revision.

Next up is a new version of the MagSafe power adapter that could include a fiber optic channel, so that the cord not only carries a power connection, but can also transmit data to and from another unit equipped to provide both (Intel's Light Peak technology isn't mentioned in the patent, but it would probably work). You can see four pins in the current MagSafe connector, but this fiber optic node would sit right in the middle of those. Cool idea, though it seems like the actual implementation would need to be worked on a little bit further.

Finally, Apple's also picked up patents for a 3D rendering system that would allow you to see live 3D in a room without glasses. This one's complicated -- it would track a user's position, and then send separate images to their right and left eyes through multiple projectors. This patent was actually filed a few years ago, so it's likely a hairbrained idea Apple had at the time, rather than anything that will eventually see the light of day. At least Apple's keeping up the creativity for us, right?

I was just thinking about this the other day actually. I was wondering if Apple would ever go to a version of the MagSafe for the connection on the bottom of iPhones, iPods? I've accidentally yanked my iPhone across the table while it was plugged into my MacBook so the MagSafe would certainly make sense there as well. They would have to address the data interruption issue if it was disconnected while syncing.

Hairbrained in America... not in Japan. We already have that here. 3D without glasses on a mobile phone. If only the operating systems on phones here were as good as iOS though.

FM tuner, about time, it's my only gripe with my iPhone 4.

I really hope it's just a firmware update, as much as I love iPhones, I'm getting tired of buying a new iPhone every 12 months.

You missed the point entirely on Fiber optic Magsafe.. The idea looking at schematics is to simplify all connections to the laptop universally to one connection fo both power and all data types. The standard connections for the day can then be derived from a breakout area on the power brick, thus removing all cord accidents from breakage of laptops and making future port compatibility as simple as changing the power adaptor... Hmmm

The past few iPhone's have had an FM transmitter chip in them that's just not being used, so it could be in a new firmware update, rather than the next iPhone revision :).

Yes and it irks me we haven't seen any jailbreak devs take advantage of it.

I wonder if the Sat. Radio info lends any weight to the Howard Stern on Itunes deal.

This has nothing to do with the iPhone. It is for the in-car entertainment system Apple is working on.

Steve wasn't telling the whole truth when he said 7" screens are no good. You won't see a 7" iPad but you will see a 7" iDevice available in cars in the future.
