Is the iPad hurting netbook sales?
It's starting to look like it. DigiTimes, which covers IT news in and around Taiwan and China, notes that both Hewlett-Packard and Acer are getting deliveries on hardware that are smaller than expected. Component makers say that "vendors are clearing inventories, which were high partly due to competition from tablet PCs."
HP was originally expected to take 4 million netbook deliveries, and instead the company is getting 3.7 million. Acer was expecting to take 3.6 million units, but now is expected to take about 3 million.
There has been continued speculation about whether the iPad would be impacting the sale of netbooks, and it's beginning to look that way. Even Microsoft has admitted that the iPad is taking sales away from Windows-powered netbooks. I think both netbooks and the iPad can be considered "accessory" computers, and while there are, of course, differences in functionality between an iPad and a netbook, they seem to be attractive to similar segments of the market.
Add to that the fact that laptop prices are coming down, as are the weights of these portable computers. The new MacBook Air computers are proving to be very popular, and they give consumers something between an iPad and a full size laptop.

Apple's success has been undoubted for years. The number of products and varieties it offers is just amazing. Its worth whatever you pay for its products. Netbooks were selling like hotcakes before the iPad was introduced by Apple. The iPad was Apple's response to netbooks, which opened a new market between smartphones and notebooks. Apple needed to be a player in this new market. And they are.

TUAW: Why are you asking me? News doesn't end with a question mark.

The wonder of the iPad isn't just a tablet form: they have an operating system and custom apps tailored to the hardware. There has not been any excellent Windows versions tailored for netbooks, nor has there been excellent custom Linux versions tailored for netbooks. Actually I'd say the Linux versions have been superior for non-tech users in some instances.
Stop trying to put a full generic OS on a netbook and we might see some progress!
For me, this reversed: my iPad is my primary computer where I do most work, and the pc is the accessory relegated to backing up the iPad, and downloading security patches.

She's getting an iPad :)
There is no way that the iPad isn't having some effect on netbook sales. Some prospective buyers will undoubtedly find the iPad's capabilities too limited for their needs, but others will be thrilled to discover a smaller, lighter and easier-to-use alternative to a Windoze netbook. Not to mention that the iPad can do things that a netbook owner can only dream of. :-)

I can't find a single supporting statement in the article for this sentence dangling at the end. Journalism 101. Check it out.
I have had a netbook for more than 3 years now and it has served me well. I find it somewhere between an iPad and a MacBook Air. I would get an iPad for somebody like my parents who don't want to do any computing but would like to get online to send and read email and nothing much more.
I recently bought a MacBook Air. It's a bit bigger than my netbook, but it does so much more and at twice the speed too. Really. My Asus eeePC took 22 seconds to boot up and maybe 10 seconds more to get online via wifi. My new Macbook Air does it in barely 10 seconds. If you can afford it, it's worth the extra money to go to the MacBook Air. Not going to get another Netbook.
But how can it... iPad is not a laptop, or even a proper replacement. THe market is retarded!
