Carcassone app going universal, gets higher price to match

Carcassone, the iOS version of the European board game, has quickly become an App Store favorite after its release, and now iPad owners can get in on the fun. The app is going universal, so it will not only run on both devices natively, but it will also have a completely enhanced UI for the bigger machine, letting you explore all of the colorful roads and meeples in full scale.

Because the app will now work on both devices, the price is being raised, from US$4.99 to $9.99. But as I understand it, if you've already purchased the app, you'll get it for the other device anyway -- if you've already paid, you shouldn't have to pay again. The update is supposed to be out on the App Store soon, but the price has already been raised. Still, given the feedback on this one so far, $9.99 is a great price for this version of the game, especially if you have both devices.

And now that the universal release is out, Coding Monkeys apparently says it can get to work on the planned expansions for the game, set to be released as in-app purchases. Our friends at Touch Arcade say they want Inns and Cathedrals, but I was always partial to Hunters and Gatherers. Maybe that's more of a mod than an expansion -- either way, there's a lot of fun left to be had in this one.

Darn it, I'd looked at it in the past and had it in my to-buy list. But, as Jon said, for those of us with 1 device it's now a total ripoff. Oh well, one scored off the list.

I disagree. I bought it for $5 but I've gotten far more use out of this game than any I've ever bought on iOS, and I've been in since the first iPhone. I play this game even more than Words With Friends!

@Steve: I hate to say I disagree too, but not all of us have iPads. So that means we now have to pay (almost) twice as much for the application just because we *can* run it native on an iPad *IF* we happened to have one? Sorry but the logic escapes me there - I still only want it on my 1 device so why should I pay more?

Regardless of how good it is / what it's worth, it's now costing users more for the same unless they are in the happy position of having both iPad and iPhone / Touch.

I'm glad that they kept to their word. I bought the app because they said that it would eventually be a universal app but it looked so good on the iPad anyway that I had forgotten that a universal was promised.

I'm also glad that there will be expansions, unlike the poor abandoned XBOX Live version that helped to teach me the game originally.

At $5 I'd buy it today just for my iPhone. At $10, since I don't have an iPad it's a rip-off.

great, can't wait to be able to play it when they add the expansions. Its so much easier to play on the iPad than to dig out the physical cards and set everything up.

Now if other great board game apps would start updating with expansions I would probably play them a lot more.

There's a different dynamic when playing with others using the physical board game. I'm happy to have both and use one or the other as most appropriate.

My favorite game and excited to see how much better it looks on iPad now that it will be native. Been playing on my iPad anyway.
