Citrix survey finds enterprise iPad enthusiasts are enthusiastic

Citrix, the company behind GoToMyPC and various flavors of virtualization, has released the results of a survey they recently took of iPad users. These weren't just any iPad users, though, but those who are part of the Citrix iPads At Work community, a site with information and forums for people who have or want iPads as part of their enterprise environment.

What did Citrix learn about the iPad in the enterprise, from people who have and/or want them there? Unsurprisingly, they're popular! What's interesting is the data that contradicts my own personal experience, primarily that 57 percent of respondents said the company will buy iPads for corporate use. All of my experience has shown that people who purchased iPads for personal use aren't that interested in using them to access corporate data. They mostly just want to take notes in meetings without looking like they're texting. However, more than one person who has asked me about mine has mentioned that everyone they talk to has a company-issued iPad.

I also noticed while reading the survey and results that a lot of people think it is a benefit to have another way to work in even more places than before. I guess I'm in the minority that believes there's a benefit to a line between work time and personal time. Another thing I found interesting is that "iPad" isn't recognized by whatever spell checker Citrix is using. I was wondering how my computer could possibly think that iPad was misspelled, and then I realized the red underline was part of the graphic.

There isn't a lot of revolutionary information here, but I did find it interesting to see how many people have come to rely on the iPad as heavily as they do. Considering the iPad was announced less than a year ago and only released eight months ago, it seems like a very steep adoption curve in the traditionally more conservative enterprise environment.

What has your "iPad at work" experience been?

We've has success running Windows apps hosted on Citrix Xenapp using the PNAgent and the Citrix Secure Gateway. We'd demo'd it on the iPhone, but the screen just was too small. With the iPad we find ourselves being very careful, trying to touch just the right spot. The keyboard on the iPad makes switching between letters and numbers a bit cumbersome.

Now it seems kind of silly to use the iPad to connect to a Windows 7 desktop, but that's been one of the more practical uses. We installed the XenDesktop agent on users PC's and added them to the list of available resources in the Delivery Services console and bingo -- it worked like a charm.

There's information on the Internet how to set it up and we also found a service that'll do it for a reasonable fee using your own hardware or if you don't have it, they'll sell it to you:

A survey of people belonging to "a site with information and forums for people who have or want iPads as part of their enterprise environment. " finds that 73% of them want the iPad to be part of their enterprise environment?

No way.

That's why the headline said "iPad enthusiasts are enthusiastic" and I called the results unsurprising. (:

They are popular at my office- nearly all execs use one now on a daily basis, and we use them in place of 70 giant binders (or 70 laptops- gah, that sucked) for our official meetings. The 10 hour battery life is the killer app- long enough for a full day meeting and 2 hours of overtime. We use Pelican cases to store and transport. Pic here: http://bit.ly/aGanRf

Hey, we'd love to profile your company's use case here on the site -- can you shoot us a note via the feedback form?

Our use of iPads has been met with great success. We bought 15 of them and wrote custom web apps using JqTouch to totally replace a paper input system on the shop floor.

Training is minimal as people just "get it" when interacting with the device. So simple to deploy, no monitor , keyboard moving parts etc.

Again, totally replaced paper job recording for over 200 employees. could not be more happy with the project.

It's not really surprising that the adoption curve would be steep ... After all the iPad is the bigger brother of the iPhone (which is highly adopted in business as it is). The device is functionally useful, and provides a wealth of functionality on the go (if you live in an area that has 3G coverage that is) in such a manageable package. I use mine for work (I am a graphics designer so that may not be all that odd though), and the Bento database system allows me access to all of my records on the go, allows me to plan a project, and unwind with media while on trips. It's a good all around performer.

I am surprised by the adoption curve. Your example is the iPhone, but I don't recall the first iPhone being deployed in corporate environments anywhere near like what the current ones are. I am surprised because this is basically the first tablet that's had widespread use and it looks like a lot of that use is in the enterprise. Usually that's not the case. Think about how many companies aren't even running Snow Leopard, or Windows 7, and those are a little older than 8 months. (:

We use iPad w/Citrix XenApp and it works quite well. Other than some issues in Excel navigating cells, it really gets the job done without the need for a lapper.
