Get a free iPhone 3GS at Best Buy on December 10

Yes, you read that correctly.

Best Buy is going to be offering the 8GB iPhone 3GS with an instant rebate on December 10 that will reduce the price of the phone to... zero. The deal, initially reported on Boy Genius Report, is for one day only, and is valid for new customers, existing customers who want additional lines, and also to people who are qualified for an upgrade from an earlier iPhone. Reading the fine print, you need to sign up for a 2-year plan at the time of "purchase."

All stores apparently have a good inventory of the phones on hand for the promotion, which seems to be in line with AT&T's stated plan of trying to get as many iPhone users signed up by the end of 2010 in case the exclusive deal with Apple ends during 2011. The usual Best Buy price for the iPhone 3GS is $99, which is line with the pricing at both Apple and AT&T stores.

If the kids have been hounding you for their very own iPhones, this is a perfect opportunity to pick up the phones for nothing. Just be sure to let the kids pick up the costs for their own voice, text, and data plans. Bah humbug!

I was happy to get in on this. AT&T bought Centennial this time last year and they've been throwing out deals to get us to switch. In my small city, no service has ever been "good". Typically, service near the interstate is good, but bad in your house. They're all uniformly bad, so it depends on what part of town you need your phone in most of the time. AT&T is only better in this case because Centennial was one of the only other 3G/GSM regional providers so they quite a few towers that duplicated AT&T's GSM towers.

This deal helped a lot because they were willing to cancel the Centennial contracts about 18 months early with no ETF... but we HAD to buy new phones for 3 accounts which was the deal breaker... obviously as an engadget reader the "free" phones don't cut it.

I have had iPhones (and have been stuck with AT&T) since the 2G's. I grew to hate AT&T because of their inability to keep up with what the iPhone had to offer....I am now closer to being satisfied with their satisfactory service. I just can't wait until the iPhone goes to Verizon in Jan./Feb?....then all the high and mighty Verizon users will see just how great their provider is when they are flooded with a few million data gobbling smart phones in less than a month. Good luck with that. As I stick with AT&T, I foolishly wonder if the hare might actually win this race...?

I've used Sprint ( the worst of all) Verizon just okay, and for the past 18 mos. Att they've been very good. I have very good coverage here in North Carolina. Sure once in a while there might be a dead spot but I had more of them w/both Verizon & way more w/Sprint. The customer service has been excellent w/ att. The c.s. w/Sprint was horrible. I was counting the days til I could get rid of them.

FYI, they are waiving sales tax as well. If you live in tax happy California like I do, that's a $40 savings. I just purchased two iPhone 3GS phones for my parents.

Cool, except in California, "Free" means spending $40-$50 on tax.

Would I have to give up my unlimited data plan? That, plus all the other issues with the iPhone 4 has kept me from upgrading from my 3G. I was able to switch out the battery and the 3G has a lot of life left in it. I'll hold off until iPhone 5 or maybe 6. I'll certainly give the 5 a few weeks to reveal all its bugs.

I've been with AT&T since they were Pac Bell Wireless (pre-Cingular) - like 15 years now. iPhone owner since 2007. Have never been compelled to switch, in large part because having a GSM phone for international use is important to me. Yeah, they got issues, but it can only get better - right?

I moved from Sprint (Treo 755p) to the iPhone 3G (now iPhone 4), and can say they're pretty equal in my area. There's one spot, up in the mountains, where I used to be able to get 1 or 2 bars with Sprint (but it was inconsistent, so for emergency use only) where I can't get any with AT&T, but that's about it. In and around town, they're equal. I was very worried about all the horror stories with AT&T, but turns out it doesn't affect me in my area.

I have an iPhone AND a Verizon work phone.
The coverage is about equal in Arkansas.
