Luxury iPhone 4s, iPads a great idea for well-heeled givers

Looking for a Christmas gift that is so unique that only a handful of people on the planet will find it beneath the Christmas tree? If you happen to have a wad of cash burning a hole in your pocket, then you might want to contact luxury electronics designer Stuart Hughes.

Liverpool, UK-based designer Hughes recently created a £5,000,000 ($7.9 million) rose gold and diamond encrusted iPhone 4, but he has a bargain available for holiday gifting. For a mere £39,995 ($63,200), you can pick up one of ten iPhone 4s that have had the everyday glass back replaced with materials from a 65 million-year-old T-Rex tooth and a meteoric stone. This lovely iPhone has a bezel made of 8.5 carat diamonds, and the Apple logo is made of platinum and diamonds.

If you miss out on picking up one of these iPhones for whomever you're trying to impress, you can always pick up one of the luxury iPads that Hughes has designed. The Supreme Fire iPad (£109,995, $173,814) is made from a 64GB 3G iPad draped in 2.5 kg of 24 carat gold. If that seems like it would be a cheap gift for your loved one, you can always upgrade to the £299,995 ($474,053) Solid Platinum iPad Supreme Edition. The casing is made of 2.7 kg of pure platinum, encrusted with 173 diamonds weighing in at 85.5 carats.

For many of us, these products are slightly out of reach, but we have video on the next page featuring Mr. Hughes and some of his earlier designs for you to drool over.

I hate to say this but, really what the heck is up with the comments? These are not official Apple products, they have just been 'dipped' (refitted into bodies) of glittering shiny piece of valuable metal and laced with minerals made in the earth (or in a lab) to just sell to a small percentage of individuals who classify as modern day Nouveau riche. The question is... does Apple's warranty cover any faults that these 'artist' may have brought to the device? Probably not, so when these things brick... at least you have a valuable brick.

Really though, its one thing to see people bash a product because it carries an Apple on it and have people defend said product (as ridiculous as it is). But really? Are you guys going to get all defensive about someone pointing out how ridiculous these things are when there are people starving and trying to make ends meet? Being laid off is not the same as being fired - there are people out there that did their jobs and did them well, but were let go nonetheless. It is the season for compassion. If these items of 'gilt' donated large sums to charity maybe it would be 'right' etc to come to their defense. But really, these things are just bricks of glitter for bragging rights. Bits of glitter that are not manufactured here, just like Apple products just without the applecare.

So frankly, I can see why sane individuals get annoyed with these extravagance posts. Yet really we all know these devices cost a lot less to manufacture than what they sell for to begin with. Just don't defend the 'rich' who are idiotic enough to buy this stuff when its going to be outdated by the first quarter of next year.

In all these comments about cost and the point of these iPhones etc. you have all missed the simple question, has it fixed the antenna problem?

Even if I could afford one of these beasts, I'd be entirely too afraid of losing or dropping the damn thing. Sounds more like buying a curse to me.

A good iPhone would be 22k gold plating in matt finish without diamonds. Would look better than this naive design. Royal items needs class and not expensive jewels stuck on them.

It is simply awful that companies like this exist. It is even worse the people who would waste that kind of money on a consumable exist. The world would be a better place without some many pretentious narcissists.

You'd definitely want that free 'Find my iPhone' account if you had one of these.

Oh the irony

Stuart might sell these things but he is unable to pay for a decent website and lacks the brain power to figure out Having a site laden with Flush might not be a good marketing tool for the iDevices he sells. I reckon it is all mock and he will get said thing made when some fool pays for it.

I wonder if he has authorization from Apple to re-create their logo, or the patented shape of the iPad back? I reckon he might get a kindly letter telling him to stop, everyone else does.

As for the above rich/poor bitch session. The point is not your wealth, it is the f-ing waste of resources, a braclet or a bridge is one thing. A casing for a phone that will not even be the same in 6 months, or a tablet that is finished in 3 months. The parts won't even exist in 2 years and good luck with getting Apple to swap the battery.

If it is meant as high "art" purchased for display only... well it might need to be artistic as opposed to some expensive minerals glued together in a rather boring arrangement.

So do you trade it in for another $8M iPhone next year? How does it work? I love Apple products but this is just insanely stupid. Like sprinkling diamonds on turds before flushing them down.

OK, everybody. So sorry for saying something critical about anyone who would spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on their phone. It was rather self-important of me, I know. And whiny. Again, my apologies.

You don't owe anyone an apology. Your opinion is entirely valid, and I, for one, agree whole-heartedly. Rampant consumerism is one thing, but this? This is grotesquely frivolous, and just serves as a reminder of how large (and widening) the gap is between honest hard-working people, and the richest-of-the-rich.

Oh, Quincy -- DON'T APOLOGIZE. Items like this were funny when times weren't so tough, but now it is an absolute vulgarity. You are right to point it out; the odd freaks who blasted you for it are insane.

It is not 'whiny' to say "People are going broke and losing their jobs left and right -- it's not the time for conspicuous consumption." It's called compassion. Don't apologize for it.
