Google Voice app update supports iPad, iPod touch
The Google Voice app for iPhone was updated today with support for the iPad and iPod touch. According to the official Google Voice blog, the update will let your iPod touch or iPad send and receive messages and enjoy other features of the service, except making calls. However, you can use your iPad or iPod touch running Google Voice to initiate a call on your iPhone with something called Click2Call. The way it works is simple. Just select the number you'd like to call, and then tap the phone you'd like to use. That phone will ring, and when you pick up, Google Voice will complete the call. I don't know why you wouldn't just use the iPhone in the first place, but there it is.
There are some other cool features as well. For instance, enabling push notifications disables text forwarding, so you don't receive duplicate messages. Plus, a new "Do Not Disturb" setting sends callers straight to voicemail. Finally, there's a new Contacts button in the dialer tab for easy access, and texting is quicker with the removal of the OK button.
It sounds like a nice update and you can grab it here.

A step in the right direction, but still waiting for VOIP over wifi support. I have to admit that I really do like how the call from Gmail works and would like an option that doesn't use any minutes on any cell phones.

However I still feel most of the complains about google voice were that people didn't understand that google voice is not VOIP. It's good to see them clarify how that is supposed to work by providing click to call, and also good to see them finally remove that stupid "sent text" dialog which made me have to tap again.
Here's to hoping the inbox refreshes more cleanly as well when I read new incoming texts.
As other people have said, your other phone may not be an iPhone.
Also, Google Voice has cheap international rates- so if you use Click2Call you call a US #, but get connected to an international one at Google Voice's low rates.
It supports the iPad, but the app isn't universal and there isn't an iPad-specific version. A shame.

Because you don't have an iPhone? Because the phone you want to make the call from is not an iPhone. I agree that if you have an iPhone and want to use Google Voice on it, you would use Google Voice on the iPhone. But in that case, it's not the Click2Call feature that would be confusing, it's the existence of a Google Voice app on a non-phone that wouldn't make sense.
But the reality is that if you want a call to appear as coming from your Google Voice number, and you don't own an iPhone, then Click2Call is very handy. Actually it seems like it'd be very handy even if you did have an iPhone. I've used Click2Call (from the Google Voice web site) to make calls and connect them to my home phone, my "dumb" phone, and, I believe, my work phone. It's a pretty handy feature if you don't assume that every Google Voice user is also an iPhone user and/or you have any reason to want to use your Google Voice as your primary number or at least as the number you use with the person you are calling.
But, in typing that, I also thought of why you might want to use Click2Call on your other iDevice to send a call to your iPhone: Maybe your using some Bluetooth solution or the wired headphones with your iPhone tucked in a pocket or even sitting on the charger somewhere. Why dig out the phone or track it down if you have your iPad in your hands? Just Click2Call on your iPad and receive the call on your iPhone with the touch of a headphone button.

Because you can ????
The iPhone is not the only phone in existence.
