SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone updated with better quality video and a new guide

SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone and iPod touch has been updated to version 2.0. The guide is improved, matching the iPad version, and video streaming quality is improved if you have a Slingbox SOLO or Pro-HD model.

Happily, older Slingboxes will still work with this update, but you won't get the highest level of picture quality. The update is free if you previously bought the stratospherically priced (US $29.99) app. To get customers on the newer hardware, the Sling people are offering upgrades at $50.00 off on a Slingbox PRO-HD or SOLO or $150.00 off of a refurbished PRO-HD.

Sling tech support notes that users with the SOLO or HD-PRO will have to update the software on their desktop machines as well. Users should also be reminded that if they have both an iPhone and iPad and are buying the apps for the first time, they each sell for $29.99. Ouch.

I agree. $30 each for iPhone & iPad Apps is BS! Especially when you can view for Slingbox for free on any desktop or laptop.

Does anyone know if the iPhone version provides improved video streaming quality if you're using a SOLO or Pro-HD with a standard definition source? I have an AV hooked to a DirecTivo and was thinking about upgrading to a new Slingbox for the iPad version of Slingplayer. This would be another benefit if the steam was better for the iPhone version as well.

Also, it seems that they don't have any more refurbished Pro-HDs in stock. I tried to order one last night and earlier today, but it was listed as OOS when I placed it in my cart.

Don't know about SD but if the encoding is improved then it's going to be better regardless of the input source.

But before you go jumping into the iPad app, go to the iTunes store and read the comments for their iPad app. Really read them! This puppy is not ready for primetime, at least if most user's experiences are any indication.
