Sony announces official PlayStation app for iPhone

The European PlayStation site today announced an upcoming official PlayStation app for the iPhone and Android platforms. The first version of this app will allow you to check your PlayStation trophies, read your friends' status updates, and keep up with news about the PlayStation console and its games. You'll even be able to share your favorite products with your friends via social networks like Twitter and Facebook.

We don't have word on a US version of the app yet, unfortunately, so until then, this is just for you folks in Europe. The app's initial release will only be available in France, UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands. Sony is already working on expanding the app to other countries; we're obviously hopeful that it will reach the US.

I was just hoping for something that could help me access my music and playlists via blue-tooth connection.

Oh Sony, how you disappoint me. I thought it was going to be a PS2 or PSP emulator. Sony could make an awesome authentic PS controller attachment for the iPhone and sell back catalog games for $5-10. Oh well...

Lame.. When they say playstation app I thought they might finally release an official psone emulator and maybe make some money off a classic console.. Checking trophies and achievements? Yawn. Also love how everything is centered around US, and to a lesser extent, Europe. How hard is it to release an Internet based product worldwide? About as hard as it is to release for Europe only! I'd put it on par with iTunes and beatports DRM issues, only being able to sell certain songs to people in certain countries. It just encourages piracy and bootlegging.

You're kidding, right? What would possibly motivate Sony to release their games on a competitor's hardware? Licensing is weird and complex and not usually right, but that's the way it works.

Perhaps a bid to tie into the mobile space to a greater degree before the psp android phone comes out next year?
