Navigon updates MobileNavigator North America with new features and iPad friendliness
Here's a nice holiday present from Navigon. MobileNavigator for North America has just caught up with features recently added to the regional versions. In version 1.70 you now get an animated Active Lane Assistant and travel and restaurant guides through Zagat, which is a US$5.99 in-app purchase. Also added is the ability to report changes in roads to Navigon for verification and distribution in a map update.
The new version of the app is universal, so it runs on the iPad as well as the iPhone. You can now share stored favorites between all of your iOS devices, allowing you to plan a trip on your iPad, for example, and transfer that info to your iPhone via email.
MobileNavigator North America currently sells for $44.99. No date yet on an update to the USA only version, but it should arrive soon. The update is free for all owners of the Navigon North America app.

Anyone know how much free space it takes to update? I have 4 gigs free and it's telling me that's not enough room.

Install the app. However it does not take that much space once installed. I would remove most of your info, install navigon then re-sync the rest of your info. Should work perfectly.
I bought the USA maps (v1.6).
When I asked if I could upgrade to North America... they said all I could do was buy the North America version...
...not happy...
It's amazing that they have yet to update their maps for this app...the maps are at least 2 years old. You notice they didn't mention new map data in the update notes...
December 22 2010 at 4:29 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThey updated the maps earlier this year, I believe with version 1.6. They state right in the product description that they're using the newest NAVTEQ maps.
December 22 2010 at 4:45 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAh, quite right. Ok then, I'll just say that that have Highway 35 near Charleston, WV, which was finished 2 years ago, marked as "Future Hwy-35". If I go to the Navteq site and use their map, though, I see it correctly.
December 22 2010 at 6:04 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThey release every iPad version except USA. NICE JOB GUYS! Way to build customer satisfaction going into 2011...
December 22 2010 at 4:15 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySeriously! I bought this USA version in August (right after their last round of updates) and I purchased the Panorama View at the same time. Way to take my money and not make an update for nearly 5 months. If they didn't have 83 versions they could update them quicker. I also emailed support to complain and their support is terrible! They asked me to describe the bug (when they have Panorama view disabled on the iPhone 4). Argh. Great product, but frustrating that they are so bad at updating the product the last half of this year.

if they didn't have 83 versions, the single version would be 83 gigs!
This version has a horrible male voice. What was wrong with the previous female one?
December 22 2010 at 4:04 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOdd; my update (on an iPhone 4) has the same female voice as before.
December 22 2010 at 4:48 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDid you set the voice settings to Text-to-Speech ("TTS") ? Without TTS it's a female voice, with TTS it's a male voice.
FYI: The previous version(s) also ran on the iPad. You could run them in either 1x or 2x sizes. This updated version is a nice improvement for iPads though.
One thing I really don't like is the way you add places to an existing route. Such as, having to go to a store on the way to ... wherever. Adding stops between or after is a pain. Yes I've emailed them.
I wish TomTom would officially support the iPad.
December 22 2010 at 6:19 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI've got TomTom too but usually end up using this.
