TUAW's Daily App: The 7th Guest

You might have missed the fact that this classic adventure game was released on iOS, but just in case, here you go: it's available now for iPhone and iPad. According to reviews on the store, this is a faithful recreation of the old full-motion video game from back in 1993. The game has you wandering around a mansion trying to solve puzzles, with a story slowly displayed through video clips featuring real actors in a real setting. The game was quite innovative for its time, being one of the first games to be distributed on CD-ROM. Unfortunately, the main reason for that was because the videos took up so much memory, and weirdly, iOS device owners are currently facing that same problem -- the game needs 623 MB free on your device to install.

But it is an interesting game from the start of the modern PC gaming era, and if you're already a fan of The 7th Guest, you'll definitely want to pick this up and play it on Apple's platform. The game is US$2.99 on the iPhone and $5.99 on the iPad. Andy Williams actually sings about "spooky ghost stories" for Christmas, so if you need one of those to play through this holiday week, try your turn at being the 7th Guest at Old Man Stauf's house.

If you liked T7G's difficult puzzles, then you will also like RO®.
RO® is a game of simple complexity, designed and created by the lead Artist on T7G, Robert Stein III.

Those puzzles were indeed left out. I just played through the entire game this past weekend -- I really don't remember the game being this short, or easy, but it's still a great game. A couple times I found myself unable to advance. When this happened I wandered around the house until I saw a new "cutscene" which usually unlocked more rooms to explore. One time the cutscene was in the kitchen, the other time it was in the study. I hope that helps.

Also, here is a link to the Trilobyte FAQ explaining that some puzzles were intentionally left out, but that they may be included in future updates.

I bought this for the iPad. It's fantastic, until you get to the point where two puzzles don't work. I'm stuck waiting for an update.

If you're referring to the piano and microscope puzzle, they were intentionally left out, as the piano puzzle is too small to play on the smaller screens and the microscope puzzle is too buggy.

The developers are working on them, but it's possible they will never be included. Since they don't affect finishing the game, it's not a big deal, and not a reason to wait, in my opinion.

Yes it is the Microscope and Piano puzzles - where did you hear that they were deliberately left out? I've gone through the house and basement again to ensure I've done all the puzzles, but I still can't get out of the kitchen door to the next puzzle. I know a few people in a similar situation.
Frustrating to get this far and not be able to complete it.

Christmas Baubles!?!?!
Are you kidding me!?
623Mb!?!

Are you seriously telling me that in 17 years nobody's managed to encode the videos a little teensy tiny bit better than that?

I have a box full of old Win95 and OS 7 Adventure games and the walkthrough manuals like Rama, Timelapse, 7th Guest, Obsidian, Myst, Riven, etc. I really miss these old classic games as I am not a shooter fan, never have been. All these games are unplayable on current PC hardware as far as I know, so if someone is bringing them to the iPhone platform I will be extremely thrilled and can't wait to play them again.
