CNN says Apple's "antennagate" biggest tech fail of 2010

CNN has a list of their biggest tech "fails" of 2010, and the number one spot is the iPhone 4 antenna issue, aka "antennagate." Perhaps it was inevitable that the hubris of Apple's past decade would eventually catch up with the company.

Antennagate, as you may recall, was the issue around a precipitous drop in "bars" (the apparent reception on your iPhone) when the iPhone 4 was held in the "death grip." I experienced this on launch day and even had a few dropped calls when putting the lower left corner of the phone into my palm. But according to Apple in a rare press event to address the issue, less than 1 percent of iPhone owners actually reported this issue.

Nevertheless, CNN also notes that the issue has quietly faded away (after a bumper giveaway and OS update or two), and the phone is still a huge seller. The fail appears to have been a mere blip. It certainly didn't have as widespread an effect as the Gawker media sites being hacked, which came in at number seven.

If i hold my or my sisters iPhone 4 normally... the antenna drops. I got a case a month after I got mine for free. My sister also got a case to fix the issue. Still shouldn't be required to do it because it was fine on my iPhone 3G that I had for two years.

And here was I thinking that CNN were showing a list of (their opinion) of the greatest tech failures of 2010, not a Top 10 list of the greatest tech failures of 2010. Even says so in the article title.

Having said that, even though it isn't a Top 10, on my own personal metric of "have my non-techie relatives heard about it" the "Antennagate" issue is certainly the only one they would have heard of.

Strange, the media made a 'non-issue' seem like a issue. Have 2 iPhone 4s in the house and the only antenna issue is the fact that it connects to AT&T.

I held off on getting an iPhone 4 because of this and am now working happily on my 4 with no real issues. I noted the drop in bars, but I have to actually TRY to make it happen. I don't understand what the big deal is and mostly I think that the media, and Apple haters took the opportunity to draw attention to the reality that Apple isn't perfect. A fact most Apple lovers have known for years, but are willing to live with.

See, Autoblog has it correctly:

Toyota and BP.

Yeah, sounds about right.

Someone is probably mad because he didn't get a free bumper. :'(

This is a joke. The only reason it was noticed is because of the shear volume of phones sold. I was at a hotel about several months ago tethering my computer to my Blackberry Storm. I was holding the phone and was getting terrible reception. I then remembered the whole "atennagate" issue then let go of my BB. Lo and behold, I got great reception about 10 seconds later. I picked up the phone and held it in the "death grip" and lost all my bars about 10 seconds later. It's commonplace on various phones and Apple was right to call it out and got crap for it. It's ridiculous so many people bashing a single company like this and then when competition comes out, they glorify the competition as the best in the world.

BUT I do agree they need to address the issue and try to get a better reception on new models.

As a side note, I think CNN gets a fail for just about every article or news story they do. Of course, that just might be me.

I would say the biggest fail was no white iPhones, as the antenna problem just flew over quickly, nobody complains about it.

Wait no, those Toyota recalls. It could have easily been caused by a short in some of the electrical things, as pointed out in a demonstration on ABC or something...

Tech failure, TECH FAILURE!!!!!
