Skype for iPhone updates to 3.0, adds video calling
In a move that's sure to make users stand up and say "Hallelujah," the latest update to the Skype app for iPhone finally adds video calling.
The newest version of the app will allow users to make video Skype to Skype calls from their iPhone via Wi-Fi and 3G, and also call Skype desktop users on both OS X and Windows (and we presume their sorely neglected Linux users), as well as those using Skype on their iPhones and iPads.
Naturally, if you're on an iPad, you won't get to send video back -- and you have to deal with the iPhone interface since there isn't a native Skype app for the iPad. But, iPad 2 could change that. If the new hardware is released with a camera, Skype will be ready for it, and hopefully with an iPad-optimized app as well.
So, have fun with video chatting via Skype and let us know what you think of it in the comments!
Thanks for the fast tip, Daniel!

Best thing yet. Used it the other day. Comes up quick. Instructions are not too existant on how to start it though. But it all works out.

I sure wish that before they wasted their development time on video they would have implemented support for bluetooth devices. A lot of people have been waiting for bluetooth support for a long time. I'd use bluetooth every day -- while video I'll rarely if ever use (and even with video I probably would want to use bluetooth audio).

December 30 2010 at 4:16 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI tried this today on the same wifi network with an iPhone 4 and an iPhone 3GS, and it quickly crashed on the 3GS, to the extent that the 3GS did not respond to the home button, and could not even be turned off by holding the power button. After a few minutes the application exited and the 3GS returned to life.
Anyone else seen problems on a 3GS?
Does it work on 4.1 jailbreak?

December 30 2010 at 11:22 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyTested with my 3Gs and my friend 100km away and he could see the images I was sending him. No probs

December 30 2010 at 3:31 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI use facetime quite a bit...but having the 3G option is nice as well. I've used Tango, too, but the Skyp video app seems to be a bit slicker...can't move your own video feed like you can in FT or Tango...
December 30 2010 at 11:08 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyother than once or twice for the wow factor... does anyone actually use facetime on a regular basis?
be honest.
