Apple's Greek support provider sues customer for hurting its feelings

Things are fine in Denmark, but they're rotten in Greece.

Dr. Dimitrios Papadimitriadis (@papadimi on Twitter) was disturbed by some dark spots on his iMac's display, so he took it to Systemgraph (AKA System Graph Technologies), Apple's official warranty support provider in Greece. Systemgraph recommended that the iMac LCD panel be replaced, and that the entire computer receive a good cleaning inside and out.

When Papadimitriadis picked up his iMac a few days later, he was dismayed to find that not only was the LCD panel still defective, but there was evidence of moisture behind the screen. The good doctor took advantage of some verbiage in the Greek Civil Code and demanded a refund or replacement of his iMac, which was still under warranty. Systemgraph refused, saying that he had not purchased the iMac from them. Papadimitriadis says he was following Apple's warranty repair procedures to the letter.

With no help forthcoming from Systemgraph, Papadimitriadis even went to a consumer ombudsman to begin the lengthy process of gaining some sort of resolution. Becoming a bit frustrated, Papadimitriadis posted a note about his experience on a forum (translation here). He didn't say anything particularly bad about Systemgraph in the forum, but simply described the situation.

The response from Systemgraph? They sued him for €200,000 (about US$267,000), claiming that he had damaged the company's reputation. The company is saying that now that this situation has begun showing up on Twitter and Apple websites, there's "an organised attempt to slander and insult" Systemgraph's name.

After all of the public relations damage that Systemgraph has done to itself, it might be a lot less expensive to just replace the iMac. There's a hearing on January 19 for the two parties. Good luck, Dr. Papadimitriadis. And Apple might want to take a look at how warranty work is done in those countries where the company doesn't provide their own support.

The date is January 18.
The company is an amazing one, they provided me with my iMac and provided help free of charge and helped me with everything I ever wanted.
The guy insulted the employees at the store and talked in the worst of manners.

Jesus Christ, he must be like http://roflhard.blogspot.com/2010/10/124.html

Not really the aftersales you expect, also there is no "verbiage" in Greek Civil Code, more like protection of consumer etc.

This is exactly how it goes on in Turkey too. So i can more or less guess what happened to this guy in Greek.

The distributor in Turkey,
-has (almost) twice the prices of Apple US.
-repair program is a joke (if you leave anything for repairs, they'll call you in a month to tell you that you'll be getting your device back, repaired, if you wait another month)
-they never accept responsibility (they act like they don't care, they just sell'em and if anything's wrong, that's your problem, not their)

This has to change. I'm sure Apple doesn't want their products to be sold this way. It's against their whole philosophy, their way of doing things and even their businness strategy.

I am afraid that this is the policy of Apple in Greece, for quite a few years now. This is the reason why I never liked anything from this company and I turned to everything but Apple...! I even managed to provide support to a cousin of mine a few years ago (more than 15) for his Quadra 800 XL, while Apple could not!

I do believe that Apple should act immediatelly and impose to System Graph Technologies to withdraw their law suit. Then they should invest some time and money on selecting some trustworthy collaborators in Greece.

Ha! Apple support in Greece ? Just forget about it. If you are unlucky enough and receive a faulty apple product (even DOA) you are lost.

the companies claims are completely baseless...

these are clearly opinions of members on the forms, and for that reason alone, the company cannot claim slander/libel...

Apple, please find another company to represent your great brand.

Apple's policy is "repair first then replace." In other words, they'd want a second repair done first before replacing the system. Further, Apple does not grant third-party repair shops the ability to replace systems. They reserve that power for themselves.

Now, of course Greek law supersedes that policy, but I bet that Apple wouldn't compensate Systemgraph for the replacement, ever. You can argue that Systemgraph could fix the unit again (properly this time), and sell it as a refurb, and that might be their only recourse, but I can see why they would resist that.

If they'd fixed it correctly the first time though, all this would have been avoided.

Assuming of course that the customer is telling the whole truth. I've known people to lie to my face when they wanted a free repair or replacement. One person insisted that their laptop hadn't been dropped, when the aluminum casing was stove in on one side. They actually accepted the premise that "God did it" as being a reasonable explanation. That kind of situation is more common than you might think.
