Apple lowers official US iPhone 3GS price to $49
Just four days after AT&T cut prices, Apple has dropped the official U.S. price of the iPhone 3GS to US$49. Apple made the adjustment -- a drop of $50 -- without fanfare.
It's widely expected that Verizon will announce its intention to carry Apple's iPhone tomorrow. In fact, it seems to be reveling in the anticipation among consumers a bit this morning, posting teasing tweets to Twitter. With that in mind, it makes sense that Apple would want to clear out some stock, and AT&T would want to lock in as many new 2-year contracts as possible before the big announcement.
We'll have full coverage of the news when it drops. In the meantime, if you're quite happy with AT&T and want a deal on a nice iPhone, here you go.
Update: US retailer Target has also followed suit.

January 10 2011 at 5:44 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhy do people worry about the cost of the phone when committing to a nearly $3000 financial commitment (cost of 2 yrs of service & taxes)?
January 10 2011 at 11:57 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyPeople just don't consider it. My boss the other week asked me to order a smartphone for her son. I said we could get an iPhone 4 for $200 and she said absolutely not, that's too much. Instead she chose a refurbished BlackBerry Torch for $0.01. I pointed out that the cost over the contract is still the same yet she still didn't get it.

Some may, but they still come to the conclusion $3200 is greater than $3000
Some people don't' want or can't afford the initial 200 + First months bill.
Some people don't care too much about what kind of phone it is so why pay more up front.
Still £428 in the UK... grr...

I wish that would be true, unfortunately we all exist as "entities" only to pay AT&T outrageous charges, unless we switch to Verizon, then we become "potential customers" ;)
And then the next day we are in Verizon's web.
January 10 2011 at 11:13 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI wonder if this means Apple will be releasing a new iPhone 4 across the board with the new antennae configuration in 8 GB, 16 GB and 32 GB and stop selling the 3GS?
January 10 2011 at 11:00 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyFinally, some competition for AT&T. Maybe they will actually view me as a customer. Just a dream......
January 10 2011 at 10:40 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDoes AT&T have a 30-day return period? If you sign an AT&T contract, and there is a Verizon announcement tomorrow, it seems like people could get out of it.
