Apple to celebrate 10 billion app downloads

Are we really at nearly 10 billion app downloads? It seems like only yesterday that the App Store was born and we celebrated its 1 billionth and 2 billionth downloads. It broke 3 billion downloads just over a year ago. But, thanks in part to the iPad and the growing accessibility to the iPhone worldwide, indeed there have been more app downloads than the current world population, and Apple wants to celebrate. The person who downloads the 10 billionth app will win a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card (that's US dollars).

You can enter the contest without purchasing or downloading an app. You must be age 13 or older and a legal resident of participating countries -- if the contest is promoted on the front page of the App Store in your country, you're good. Only 25 entries per iTunes account or email address are accepted per day. Read the complete rules to find out all the details and good luck!

You folks are complaining about spending $2k in taxes when you then get $10k worth of iOS and OSX apps???? Seems like a deal to me.

Since you have to pay taxes on this, $10,000 is a lot to add to your income in terms of the amount of taxes you may have to pay. If you were to get a $10,000 raise at work, you would still be paying taxes with every paycheck, but this prize would be a sudden spike in income with no taxes pre-paid, thus you would have to pay a lot in April 2012.

And it's too bad the prize is $10,000 in iTunes Gift Card. Depending on your tax bracket (average on this board is probably 20 to 30%), you could be paying substantial tax on something most of you won't spend immediately. And since Apple's rule specifies the card cannot be transferred or substituted, you are basically screwed paying $2000-3000 tax.

Now if the prize is Apple Gift Card, which can be used toward purchase of Apple's hardware, I wouldn't have as much problem paying $2000-3000 tax on this thing.

Remember, you only win by being the person who purchases the 10th billion app or the person who fills out the form after the 9,999,999,999th app is purchased, but before the 10th billion app is purchased.

Fine print for the win!
