Catan app adds Seafarers expansion with in-app purchase

The expansion content is US$3.99 inside the app, but even if you don't want to shell out the extra four bucks, one of the scenarios is included, so you can at least see how it changes the game. The Catan app itself has been critically acclaimed, and I really like this model of releasing content -- it seems like a nice solid way of both making sure that content updates are significant improvements to an app, as well as allowing developers to get their own reward for releasing that content. Hopefully we'll see some more apps, outside of the board game model, take this approach in the future.

The great Catan iOS game has added in its first expansion, available via an in-app purchase, and it's based on the Seafarers of Catan...

I agree with the others that this version desperately needs some sort of online multiplayers, and updated graphics would be nice too. But the added expansion is fantastic, and really breaths new life into the game. I think its on the expensive side, but since I got the game during one of the $0.99 sales, I didn't mind so much.

Catan is a fantastic game and definitely deserving of the time and attention to do it right. I don't think the developers of this version have done it justice. This is the same sad old port that has been around in other systems (xbox) and can be buggy. I've heard that they've finally fixed the AI in this version but I haven't seen any evidence of that yet.
I agree that it's a critically acclaimed game but I would not agree that this is a great port to iOS.
And seriously, the mobile version has been out on every phone in the world it seems like before iOS got it. I wish Teuber would license this to a developer who would take the time to give it the attention it deserves.
I really wish it was a universal version. I'd like it on my iPad, but I'm not about to pay for the game again, and then the expansion as well for both devices.

January 20 2011 at 9:46 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIts great to finally see the expansions but I find myself playing the iPad version a lot more now since it came out and still waiting for an update there. Hopefully it won't take as long for the rest of the expansions. I still like the interface and graphical style of this version of the game more than other versions, like the PS3 version, but it still has some major issues with the AI.
I'd also like to see an app for Rivals for Catan. Been playing that a lot recently since we don't have to worry about finding 4 people. But keeping all the categories of cards separate and the playing space can still be a bit of an issue.
I'm very disappointed in this "2.0" release. No retina and no Game Center? this once "must have" app feels like a relic.
