iPad multi-touch gestures will be withheld from iOS 4.3

There's bad news for those anticipating multi-touch gestures in iOS 4.3. It seems that the feature won't be a part of the public release. Engadget and others have confirmed that the feature is just a developer preview, so no ninja-level pinching and swiping for us normals.

That's unfortunate, as it looks very cool. After the break, there's a video demonstrating some multi-touch features on an iPad running an iOS 4.3 beta. In a nutshell, gestures let you use pinches, swipes and so on to move between applications, history, etc. on your iPad. We saw a patent application for multi-touch gestures back in April of 2010.

While cool on the iPad, gestures are somewhat troublesome on the iPhone, as your hand easily covers the entire screen. Would you want to do that with your iPhone? The question is moot, as we won't be getting the feature for a while.

I enabled it on my iPad with iOS 4.3.1 by this article:

I have enabled. From what I can tell, Apple is looking to eliminate the Home button. The multi touch gestures only seem to replace functions of the only hardware button that exists on the front of the device. The only feature not enabled is waking from sleep. However, this can be done with the lock button.

well.. its optional to use. The developer should be able to decide themselves if they want to add it to their app, that way piano apps and drawing apps could disable it, saving the "pages" for apps that you would normally switch between and not having to swipe through 5 games to get to mail. I use it all the time and love it. Switching between safari, mail and things is so much better with 4 finger swipe. For example, i was studying for an exam and had notes on my mail and sample questions in safari. I switched back and fourth 10 times/min, and the 4 finger swipe made the switching almost unnoticeable.

Whats left of 4.3? freakin airplay stuff =/

I think it makes sense from a marketing point of view to not include gestures at the release of iPad 2. For non techies who will buy most of the iPads it would be an inhibiting factor. "Oh you mean I have to learn some new gestures just to use it? I guess I will have to think about it."

It would make more sense to add it by virtue of an optional app (so users could try it out) or as a future iOS update when the majority of users are more receptive to it.

It's not that big a deal!

Argh. I was really looking forward to this on an iPad 2. The gestures for app-switching seem like a great step forward.

I completely agree. This was the one thing I was looking forward to in version 4.3. In fact, Apple can pull all the other features--just leave 4/5 finger gestures in there.

I think we should all start to give Apple our feedback and let them know we want the option for these gestures in iOS 4.3:

If it's doable, I'm inclined to track down what will be the GM of 4.3, just to have the gestures, if they are still there.

This is great news. System-level multitouch gestures were a terrible idea.

When I'm in an app, I don't want to have to tiptoe around system gestures to interact with the application, and I want developers to be free to respond to however many touches, in whatever direction, that makes their app the most useful, intuitive, and expressive for me.

Apps where, say, you draw with your fingers, or play piano on a keyboard, etc., would end up triggering the system level commands when you don't want them to. This is especially true with kids who use an iOS device; they don't interact with apps as deliberately as adults do, often using their whole hand to touch.

Sure, it would be a teeny tiny bit faster to move between apps, but at the cost of constraining the possibility space of what you can do with the apps. I care a lot more about what my apps can do than optimizing how I switch between apps. I spend vastly more time in apps than I do switching between them. The current system for changing apps is intuitive and concrete (want out? push the button!); even a two-year-old can grok it on the first try. System gestures? Not so much. Not only is there no way to intuitively discover them, but they break the "fourth wall" of app design, namely, the idea that the "device becomes the app".

I am very happy to hear that the gestures won't make it in. It was an awful idea.

actually, this parallels really closely what they previewed for 10.7 Lion, so if not now, perhaps these gestures will be added to coincide with the next release of Mac OS X.

The gesture implementation needs some work, IMO.

Damn, and it looked so interesting and much more efficient than double clicking the home button. At least on the iPad, the video with it on the iPhone looked like a joke.

Btw, I find it kinda funny that an Apple weblog STILL uses flash for stuff when people using any kind of iDevices won't be able to use it.
