New Cydia release makes re-jailbreaking easier

Saurik is releasing a major update to Cydia that includes a new Manage Account feature. Though it won't help you jailbreak your device, the new version of Cydia will make it easier when you need to re-install your favorite jailbreak applications. Similar to the Mac App Store, this Cydia account lets you keep track of purchased applications and downloads. This is a much-needed feature that iOS 4 unfortunately still lacks.

The next time you jailbreak your iOS device and launch Cydia, you will be able to log into your account and easily install your tweaks and apps without having to search the Cydia repositories. The login for this feature is tied directly to your Facebook or Google account so you won't have to remember yet another password. More good news for jailbreakers as a future of version of Cydia will expand on this account feature and let you make comments, add ratings, and back up installed Cydia repositories.

I bought PkgBackup for a couple of bucks and it works great. I wonder if this new Cydia will be better than PkgBackup.

"This is a much-needed feature that iOS 4 unfortunately still lacks."

The iPhone has always had this feature for App Store apps. There's something called "iTunes" that keeps a copy of your apps and actually automatically reinstalls them for you. It's really cool. Everyone should try it.

Also, for those who don't understand what this Cydia "update" does, let me break it down. You don't have to update Cydia. The new link automatically shows up on the Cydia home page. It lists all the Cydia Store apps you have purchased. It doesn't have a "reinstall all" button or anything like that, just a list of what you've paid for. Yes, it makes things easier, but don't overestimate what it is. It's just a list.

When is this update out? Not seeing it in available upgrades.

ah it's just a new link on web page, not an app upgrade.

Interesting. The lack of this function is the reason I bought one JB app and never bought a second - I lost the app upon upgrading.

You always lose your jailbreak apps when you update iOS. You don't have to re-buy them though, just reinstall the app. It's registered to your device so you don't have to pay again. And if you get a new device, just login through your Cydia account and it can be reinstalled for free. It's always been that way. The only thing this new update does is keep a list of jailbreak apps you that you have paid for. That's it.

This has got absolutely nothing to do with making re-jailbreaking your phone easier, all it does is help people keep track of their apps after they have already re-jailbroken their device.
I hate misleading and blatently incorrect blog titles like this tricking me into reading stuff I already read previously!

Note that, right now, you can only see your purchased apps (and only *all* of them). There's not yet a way to maintain a list that includes your free downloaded apps or to tag items on the list as those you'd like installed vs. those you may have once downloaded but don't necessarily want loaded back on your device in the future. I do believe at least some of these features are in the works, though.

Great! I just kept a text document listing the apps I purchased. Not a big deal to do this.
