The Daily to launch by mid-February for 99-cents per week

The Daily, News Corp's foray into the world of digital newspaper publishing, might debut in the next few weeks. Executive James Murdoch, Chief Executive of News Corp. in Europe and Asia, verified this tentative launch date during the DLD conference in Munich, Germany. He also confirmed the iPad-based digital paper will be available for 99-cents per week as previously rumored.

Available initially in the US, The Daily is an attempt by News Corp. to expand into the online delivery of news and monetize this new form of journalism. News Corp. has reportedly hired 100 journalists to provide content for this iPad newspaper and is working closely with Apple on this project. The iPad newspaper is expected to require iOS 4.3, which will include support for subscription-based pricing. If The Daily will debut in the next few weeks, we can also expect iOS 4.3 to become available in the same time frame.

Count me out. News Corp cheapens whatever it touches, including namely the WSJ. I won't contribute a dime to an organization that sought to baldly weigh in on our political process with a $1 million donation to Republicans.

So what I am hearing here is that no matter if it turns out balanced, and no matter that Rupert is working with Steve where the NYT wouldn't, no matter that it could be a model to eventually save newsgathering on the local levels, or that the price is ridiculously low, most of you have made up your minds no matter what?

How open minded.

We don't have to contribute to his income if we don't like him. That's called free enterprise. Why should we help support his brand of terrorism?

And frankly, why should he change his stripes for this? He doesn't do something if he can't put his stamp on it.

Propaganda from Rupert 'I only became an American to control your media' Murdoch?

Pass.

Under no circumstances would I ever pay actual money to News Corp. Their Fox Propaganda Channel destroys any reputation they ever had. Their purchase of the Wall Street Journal has ruined its credibility.

I hope they enjoy their 50,000 loyal customers after six months...

Hoping this fails as big as their MySpace acquisition has.

I suppose this is going to be fair and balanced news...

Steve, what ARE you doing?

Oh, am I ever sick of hearing about The Daily. You would think it's the second coming of Steve!

Well... sure. But you break the consumer in slow like, oiling em up for more, bigger coin in the slot that becomes the social normal.

Tracks, optional high quality for more, mandatory high quality, variable pricing, extras.

Gonna really have to be something special to warrant a fee over other free news publications. Read: BBC.
