WSJ: Verizon confirms $30 unlimited data plan - for now
Verizon will offer a $30 unlimited data plan, the Wall Street Journal confirmed this morning, similar to the original plan that AT&T offered when the iPhone was originally introduced. This comes after a couple weeks of speculation.
"I'm not going to shoot myself in the foot," said Lowell McAdam, the carrier's chief operating officer.
Engadget, however, is showing that Verizon is doing away with its tiered data plan option entirely.
This offers another incentive not only for new iPhone customers, but luring over current AT&T users who are on the fence about whether or not to switch. AT&T has had capped-tier data plans since June, but those iPhone customers with older contracts had their unlimited data plans grandfathered in.
Update: The WSJ updated its blog to say that the unlimited data is a limited-time option, and that Verizon will be moving to tiered pricing in the near future.

30$? Wow... I pay 9,5⬠for my unlimited data plan here in Finland. That's like 12.92$ with the current Euro-to-USD course. I feel for you guys, I really do :(

January 25 2011 at 2:27 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThat's going to have to be a decision you make on your own. AT&T has demonstrated that, at least for the time being, those with unlimited plans will be able to keep them even while upgrading to the new phone. Verizon has never had a situation where they don't offer unlimited plans, so it remains an unknown.
I would say go with what you have today. If you're grandfathered in on AT&T's unlimited plan and your service is acceptable, then I would probably hold tight with them for now and not jump ships until Verizon drops the other shoe. For me, however, I switched to Verizon to be on a family plan and this is encouraging news once my upgrade is due later this year.
I don't use an exorbitant amount of data, however, when I need it for special occasions, I don't want to worry about exceeding a limit and paying an unreasonable amount for that excess. A good reason for me staying with ATT is that I am grandfathered in with unlimited data.
Phone companies are stupid to put limits on their plans.
WE ARE MORE STUPID LETTING THEM!!!!
argh. when i heard Vzn wasnt going to do the new every 2 upgrade and id have to pay full price i was like wtf. then i heard about the pricing issues and that was a strike 2 and i was resigned in staying with my att iphone.
but this changes things. and im excited. it offsets that im grandfathered in with ATT which was a strong point for me.
I have some choices to make as my contract just ended on the 10th with Verizon and i could upgrade as its not feasible for me to have 2 phones anymore even though i lowered my Vzn plan charges just to stay on for 2 years with hopes the iphone would come.
now i am at a crossroads..im thinking either get rid shutting my phone off or just let my mom get an ipad w/ Verizon and walk away from it like that even though im sentimental and been with them for many many years.
This will be fun, competition is a good thing.
I can't wait to see what plans look like for iPhone5 @ the end of July when my contract is up, and maybe even another carrier comes online.
AT&T's call issues are not huge to me as I use that feature of my iPhone the least, but where I live Big Red is the king of coverage.
Maybe we'll even se the Holly Grail of data plans. One price unlimited for iPad/iPhone/Tether. I would even pay more, just think multiple data plans are silly.
Let me use a combo 5GB the way I want and I will give you my $$.
(ex = iPhone/iPad3G/Hotspot on each device for Mac on both = 1 price)
Very very smart move. The metered data tomfoolery was what sealed my breakup with AT&T.
January 25 2011 at 11:26 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyPerhaps VZ is anticipating a large number of current VZ Android users switching, which may not increase their data usage....I think the unlimited will be short-lived...great carrot, but they will pay the price and change it at some point.
My firm pays for my ATT iPhone, so I'm staying. Even if I was paying, I'd stay...works great in my area and I do rely on voice and data at the same time. That will not be a problem for VZ once LTE is in place, but in the short term, it's a problem in my book.
Looking forward to two networks sharing the load...perhaps we will all be happier!
Verizon has it pretty easy right now.
Do the things that people are most vocal about AT&T doing wrong, right... if they can just do that, they are going to get a lot of jumpers --- and AT&T will have to become more reasonable since they will need to compete...
I still have my old AT&T Unlimited plan, but if I was on a 2GB tiered plan that would look very enticing.
