Adobe's Packager to be updated for iPad support
Adobe is reportedly working to update its Packager for iPhone and will launch it in a new version of the popular Adobe Creative Suite bundle. Packager for iPhone is a utility included in Adobe Flash Professional CS5 and the Adobe AIR SDK that lets developers export their Flash-based applications to the iOS platform. The updated version of Packager for iPhone is rumored to include improved support for the iPad as well as new Android devices. The tool will also improve touch support by including additional gestures such as pinch to zoom. Adobe's Packager for iPhone was bundled into Creative Suite 5, but its development was abandoned when Apple banned the use of third-party development tools before the launch of iOS 4. When Apple reversed this decision several months later, Adobe kicked up the pace of development to improve this application for their Flash developers.
According to AppleInsider, Adobe will release this updated tool in an interim version of Adobe Creative Suite that will land before Version 6.0. The version has been referred to internally as Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Digital Publishing. Screenshots of Adobe Flash Professional CS 5.5 have been spotted, and the application is reportedly under beta testing. Information on a potential launch date is still unknown.

One thing to keep in mind is the CS5-- the current version-- does not include Acrobat X (Acrobat 10, they just call it X). Adobe has had these interim updates before since Acrobat is on a separate schedule from Creative Suite. In the past, these releases had been short on the feature side for Photoshop, etc., and Acrobat was the main new item.

From: http://www.adobe.com/support/flash/downloads.html
"Flash Professional CS5 Update 11.0.1
06/02/2010 This Flash Professional update includes the latest AIR 2.0 support, support for creating full resolution iPad applications, bug fixes, and performance improvements in the Packager for iPhone."
Note that it also already supports multitouch support such as pinch. An update to the Packager for iPhone is likely in the works, to update it and get it in align with Adobe's AIR for Android API, but this rumor is way, way off.
Yep, Packager works fine for iPad already. http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/packagerforiphone/ click the product details tab. They're just rolling it into Flex Mobile (SDK "Hero") now.

I jailbroke my iPad, thus I run Frash, but that's a pain in the ass since 4.x jailbreaks required tethered boot, and Frash sometimes doesn't play very nice. Not that my iPad ever needs to reboot but still. Every once in a while I enjoy a good Facebook game, and that's one of the things which would be perfect for my iPad that out of the box it just plain cannot do. I can get an official version of Flash for Android on my Nexus One and it's never crashed the browser. Ever. So I don't buy the stability argument anymore. The problem with Android is that my phone is way too small for Flash games, and every single Android tablet out there is GARBAGE. I'd get better results running iDroid on my iPad if and when that comes around.
Ok.. dead horse has been beaten.. lol.
Android is not a version of OSX. So while you might not experience browser crashes on your Nexus One, how many have you experienced with your Mac due to Flash?
January 31 2011 at 10:34 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyNone, because I don't have a Mac, lol.
Still, I also never see crashes in Windows 7 or Vista SP1 with Chrome or Firefox. My girlfriend has zero problems with Flash on her 08 iMac, but did have a few under Firefox with her Powerbook G4; not sure if that would indicate a less stable set of browser/Flash combos on the PPC side.
But chew on that, Android and Win V/7, both operating systems known for being on the unstable side, can handle Flash on a regular basis without crashing. Adobe just needs to get it done, but on the flip, Apple needs to be open to Flash if a version is written that is both stable, and easy on the battery for Mac OS X and iOS.
It can be done, but honestly I feel Adobe sees themselves as shut out by the House of Jobs, thus has less emphasis on stabilizing Flash for OSX/iOS.
