Report that iPad is losing share to Android tablets corrected

A circulating report falsely suggests the iPad is still the #1 tablet on the market, but is losing market share to Android. According to market research firm Strategy Analytics, the iPad held on to a 75.3 percent market share in Q4 2010, while Android captured a respectable 21.6 percent share. This distribution differs greatly from the previous quarter, when the iPad dominated with 95.5 percent market share, and Android took a small 2.3 percent. Much of this boost comes from sales of the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which reportedly jumped to 2 million units by the end of the year.

Good news for Apple, though, as the data used in this Strategy Analytics report is incorrect. After stating it had sold 2 million Galaxy Tab devices early last week, the Korean manufacturer confirmed on Friday that this figure was the number of devices sold to carriers and other retailers. It was not the final number that landed in the hands of consumers. Samsung executive Lee Young-here corrected this misunderstanding and stated that the number of tablet devices sold to consumers is actually "quite small." Until Samsung can produce numbers based upon consumer sales, the iPad will continue its reign as the dominant tablet on the market.

All these stats didnt matter with Android back in early 2010. They still grabbed a ton of marketshare before it was said n done.

You should correct your article. The Samsung spokesperson said that sales had been "smooth" not "small". The original press release contained an error (see Engadget).

I never understood why people with no ownership, stock or business with a company get so wrapped up on sales numbers. As if another product selling isn't a good thing, fools. iOS has only gotten better since competition came around...

How could the iPad do anything but lose market share? Nine months ago it was basically the only tablet of it's type in existence and thus held 100% of the market. As more competitors enter the tablet market, Apple's market share will drop.

And who give a crap, anyway.

False. They make money from the ads you click, which appear from the terms you search, essentially anything you ever do on Google makes them money or at least has the potential to make them money. Android is centered around search, which in turn makes them more money. Them's the breaks man.

Remember, Apple is a hardware company at heart. Of course Google doesn't make money off of hardware sales, they don't make hardware. But every mobile device sold makes Google money in some way, look at all the AdMob content you see on iOS apps. Google doesn't have to sell a single Android device to make money on mobile platforms. They did it for the year and a half period between the iPhone launch and the Android launch, and they've done it for the 10 years prior to the first iPhone launch. All about advertising.
