iPhone pre-orders slam Verizon Wireless website

After an early start and an easy ordering process, it looks like Verizon's servers have finally succumbed to the throng of Verizon customers trying to pre-order an iPhone 4. The ordering page for the iPhone 4 is not responding, and customers are taking to Twitter with complaints. From the numerous postings, it appears as if things went south around 5 AM this morning.

If you are looking to add a new line, you will have to wait for Verizon to up its server capacity or hope things go back online when demand dies down at some point in the day. If you want to upgrade your current line, then point your browser to Apple's website. Apple is taking pre-orders today, and its site is still online. So, Verizon customers, what are you waiting for? Go, go, go and grab yourself an iPhone 4.

@Jorn - Yeah, I am not sure if your cow analogy really applies here. Airlines offer benefits when you fly miles with them. You get status and so on. Even supermarkets give rewards points. There are surely other examples of loyalty rewards. I've had my phone number since it was Bell Atlantic, then Verizon bought them and I never left. Any person walking off the street tomorrow can get an iPhone from Verizon for $199. If I left tomorrow for AT&T I can get one for $199 I'm sure. But Verizon is nice enough to let me buy it for $399, only if I send back my blackberry (which they will resell) or $599 otherwise. They are so big they really don't give a sh**. How can you blame them? Still seems very lame.

I just don't understand why anyone is getting this phone when the iPhone 5 is coming out in a few months.

I'm astonished by how I'll prepared VZW is despite the ridiculous amount hype surrounding the release of a 6 month old phone (Unfair? Perhaps.)

How is it that consumers fall for this over and over again? Anyone remember 2007, when it took 3 days to get our shiny new iPhones onto AT&T's network? Here we are 3 years later, and virtually nothing has changed.

Folks, these telecoms are playing you year after year. I wonder how many VZW iPhone customers will be back here complaining when the CDMA iPhone 5 is launched right along side the AT&T version in 4 short months?

There's a reason why Apple spends MILLIONS keeping their unannounced products secret. It's all about preventing us from making informed decisions on what and when we buy.

Sorry about the rant, but these annual iPhone hype-nouncements are getting so old. And sadly, we're entirely to blame for our Pavlovian drooling each time Apple rings the bell.

"it appears as it things went south around 5 a.m. this morning."

As opposed to 5 a.m. this evening?

I love it. All you D-bags touting how much better Verizon is? Strike one. All those reports from people online who've tested the phone on Verizon's network and said it's great? There are about 4 and a half people right now using the phones on their network. How can you really test it without having everyone else on as well to see if the network still holds up?

Yep, I have second your comments.

VZW is as slow as pond water, EVERYWHERE.

I have an HTC Incredible as a backup phone, and even with VZW's own HotSpot App, I've never achieved anything over 700k. My AT&T iPhone gets 4-5mbps just about anywhere there's 3G.

AT&T certainly isn't Panacea, but if you're going to a VZW iPhone, you're downgrading quite a bit.

Oh, I should mention that these speeds are TODAY, before several million iPhones log onto VZW. I can't WAIT to try a few speedtests after launch day....
