AT&T strikes back at Verizon with voice/data ad

Verizon may have their iPhone 4 coming on line in a matter of days, but AT&T isn't taking the assault on their market lightly.
A new AT&T ad titled "Answer" shows a man working late and receiving a call from his wife on his iPhone 4. As she reminds him that it's their anniversary, he surfs and talks at the same time to quickly try to make dinner reservations and turn a potentially bad situation into a good one.
The Verizon iPhone 4, of course, won't have the ability to provide voice and surfing capability at the same time. Good zinger, AT&T.
The video can be seen in its entirety on the next page.

Surely AT&T could just do an ad where the guy is flying out to almost anywhere and his phone works just fine (80% of the world uses GSM/3G) while the Verizon guy is stuck with a beautiful paperweight or has to run around towns desperately looking for open Wifi spots?

February 06 2011 at 12:08 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIf that's all they've got over Verizon (which seems to be the case imo), then that's pretty sad. Gladly sticking with Verizon.
February 05 2011 at 9:33 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis is a feature that has kept me as an AT&T customer. I also travel alot and I need to be able to use my phone when I'm out of mainland USA for example I was in St. Thomas US VI. a few months back and I really had to take care of alot of business while inwas on vaca with that being said the only wireless company that had a tower on said island was AT&T that was huge for me. I get 3G speeds which btw where faster then the were in Philadelphia but I also was able to get loads Of work done and still have a way to communicate with the world.

She was driving somewhere and got lost, and it was dark. I put her on speaker phone while I looked up directions for her on Google Maps. In that situation it was a life-saver.
February 05 2011 at 10:39 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe more people jump off AT&T the better for me personally. Bon Voyage.
February 05 2011 at 10:19 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWill it really be better? I'd like to think iPhone users jumping to Verizon will make it easier for those of us who stick around. Yes, you heard me. Just because I'm complaining doesn't mean it makes financial sense to buy out my contract and jump right now. But as a paying customer, I'd like to see AT&T actually do something to improve it's network and reliability. I don't see much, if any improvement over the years I've been a customer. Verizon brags incessantly about how much it puts into building it's network. I don't hear AT&T talk about building up.
February 05 2011 at 10:59 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIn real life, that call would have dropped 6 times. Simultaneous voice and data is only an advantage if both work.
February 05 2011 at 7:49 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyReally? Because I haven't dropped a single call in over a year.
Obviously you are in an area with poor service or a lot of people, but don't assume everyone is. I really hope for your sake that the Verizon coverage is better but I think a lot of people might find out it's not, especially in busy areas.
I work in the Washington DC Metropolitan area. My wife lives in the Philadelphia metro area. Both show up as being about as highly covered as possible on AT&T's maps. What area are you in? I make very few calls, most of them to my wife. The majority of calls to my wife drop repeatedly.
I still have a contract with AT&T until next year, so it will be a while before I find out if Verizon is any better. One weird thing I notice about Verizon is how many "die hard" users there are. I've been with AT&T (Cingular prior) for a long time, and I've never met a die hard AT&T user. Most AT&T users are like me, and prior to the iPhone only stuck around because the prices seemed better or we got a discount.
I had a Verizon BlackBerry for a job once, and I don't remember the call quality and reliability being much better than with AT&T, but most Verizon people swear it is.
if CDMA is working like Edge, the major problem is when you're surfing the internet or watching a video with your iPhone, your incoming calls are bounced to your voicemail. That's typically iPhone 1st gen versus iPhone 3G. Sometimes it can be a major problem if someone really need to reach you ...
February 05 2011 at 7:02 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyBut the Ad was unrealistic... they didn't show the call getting dropped twice.
February 05 2011 at 6:53 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyi use the data/voice function all the time as I use my iphone for business. I would say 90% of that feature is used by me for work. To tell the truth i barely use the 'voice' feature.Data is how I communicate with most of my clients. So to me its ATT, you might be different. So I guess it comes down to whats more important. BTW im in L.A and ATT coverage is stellar.
