Marathon coming to the iPad (we hope)

"Will it play DOOM?" This used to be the first question anyone had about a new bit of gear, regardless of what it was. Oddly, the answer kept being yes.

Remember DOOM? You might not if you're a longtime Mac user, since the attempts to bring it to the Mac really only met the dictionary definition of "port." Yeah, you could play it, but it wasn't any fun.

Then Bungie came along and decided to take their own shot at it. I'm sure you remember that one. It was called Marathon. You may also remember what happened to Bungie: Microsoft wrote a check and that was that. But right before that happened, Bungie open-sourced Marathon, which runs on Mac OS as Aleph One. So you could still get it on your Mac, but only on your Mac.

Until now.

TouchArcade is reporting one of their forum threads contains the news that developer Daniel Blezek is actually working on bringing this to the iPad. He has also posted that it hasn't been a completely smooth process, and there's still a question of GPL licensed code being sold on the App Store. But if you have an iPad and a whole lot of spare time, as of yesterday afternoon Daniel said he was still looking for beta testers.

Marathon (and 2 and infinity) was just the most involving game I've ever played. So many nights spent carefully exploring every level, wondering what awaited behind each corner. I still remember playing the 3-level leaked alpha, preordering the game at macworld boston...I still have the floppies in their original pamphlet case. :) My heart sank when microsoft bought the wonderful people at Bungie away from us.

When everyone was raving on about Half Life's depth of story I remember thinking: 'But Marathon's story was even DEEPER, why does no-one care about the Mac?!?' *SIGH* Ah Marathon, I'm still waiting for the Doom 4 engine version...

Did anyone play the Unreal Tournament marathon multiplayer mod? Looked like fun, but was it?

Marathon! That was the first game I got on my LC475 way back in 96(?)- so big it took 4 3.5" disks if I remember correctly.

Well, easy enough - release it for free, I would gladly hit up a donation link on the developer's website (once I have the iPad 2 in hand, at least)

Actually, Halo was originally Mac and PC bound, to be released on the same day. Not wanting Apple to make such a leap forward in the gaming market, and wanting to kickstart their XBox project, Microsoft bought Bungie, took it away from the Mac (a port would eventually make it over), and that was it.
